Hi everyone! I have been on vacation, and then up to Chicago for my annual thal check-up. I finally know the reason I have thal intermedia! I always knew that I had thal minor (one of my beta genes is affected), but no one knew why my hemoglobin was always lower than what it should be with minor. The results of my alpha gene testing showed that I do not have the usual 4 alpha genes - I have 5! One set is a triplicate which is evidently a rare condition. Anyone else out there have that? The extra alpha gene causes problems by making too many alpha chains.
If you have intermedia and don't know why, try to get your alpha genes tested, if possible, they may be the cause. It's good to be back, and I hope to be catcing up on all the posts. Take care, Jean
