i am 22yrs old, male, india, suffering from thalassemia minor. i smoke at least 5 cigarette daily. i have been doing this since last two years. i know that smoking is dangerous, but as a thalassemia patient, how will it affect me? i also occasionally take alcohol. i have to work under conditions of stress, sometimes, without sleep for days, and others sleeping for a day....

Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen available to your body. Depending on your hemoglobin level, you may already be in a mild state of oxygen reduction. Smoking will add to that along with all the other dangers to health that it brings.

Thal intermedias and majors have another reason to not smoke. Cigarette smoke contains iron which is very easily absorbed in the lungs, adding to iron overload. One more reason not to smoke.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.
