Studies of hydroxyurea have used subjects as young as 1.5 years, but I don't know what the age limit is in India. This study was conducted in India. Talk to the doctor that prescribed hydroxyurea and inform him or her about the transfusion doctor's concerns.

We administered orally hydroxyurea in 70 patients of Beta-thalassemia with dose of 15-20 mg/kg/day.
They have been followed up for a period of 4 months - 3 years. The age of the patients ranged from 1.5-25 years...Conclusion: Hydroxyurea remains a good option for patients who have presented with anemia at more than 2
years of age. Long term side effects need to be evaluated.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.
