self destructive behavior?
« on: August 22, 2008, 02:18:41 AM »
we all know that smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol is bad for anyone.
but does anyone out there think that if someone with thalassemia major/intermedia/minor smokes or drinks, that it is considered self destructive behavior?

I guess it has to do with the existing health of the organs like the lungs and liver.

Having poor chelation damages the liver and this could make things worse with these "Destructive Behaviors"

The iron overload, problems associated with blood transfusions and all other factors in thalassemia. It is best to avoid further decay of the body using ' Destructive Behaviors '.

People smoke and drink. Thals are people and some drink and/or smoke. Is it anymore self-destructive in thals than non-thals? Is it intentionally self-destructive, or any more so in thals? It is very foolish for thals to smoke because in addition to the known risks of smoking, cigarette smoke contains high amounts of iron which is readily absorbed by the lungs. Drinking to excess is also foolish, as the livers in thals are already under great stress from iron.

But isn't the most self-destructive thing that many thals do is not complying with chelation?
Andy

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Don't we have enogh problems with Thalassemia that we have to look for more by drinking or smoking? We can't avoid our disease but we can refuse smoking and drinking so I think that it is a a completely self-destructive behaviour. Of course, smoking and drinking are dangerous for everybody but we should be more conscious of what is it like to be ill and we should try to avoid new illnesses.

This is my third time and so far it is working for me. It is now 1 month smokefree.
I was using patches and gum. They say to use the patches for at least 8 weeks but everyone is different.
Habitrol has patches and gum. They also have locenges as well but they were too strong.
Thalassaemia is a lifestyle not a burden.
