Dieschien's Syrup of Haemoglobin -Anyone know if its still made?

Does anyone know if this product is still made or available?  It is made in France and comes from Sheep's blood, and is a tonic.
It was prescribed for me in the Caribbean decades ago.  It was one of the few things that worked for me and
in three days or less I would have more energy and feel so much stronger.  didn't have to take much at all. I know it sounds gross, but it worked, though messy to take and clean up after.

I'm thinking that maybe they have stopped producing it.

Not certain if this is the right place to post this, If its not, please excuse etc.

I've never heard of this and can't find it mentioned in a search (perhaps spelling is different?), but it would be a high iron product which would indicate iron deficiency in addition to thal minor. Iron won't affect thal minor in any positive way. Thal minor and iron deficient anemia can coincide and patients with both do report improvement after eating iron rich foods.

Thanks Andy - I think I spelt it incorrectly it is: Deschiens Syrup of Haemoglobin.  It did not contain any iron additives, it was just some way they processed sheep's blood an added sweetner, both look and tasted like blood.
I am not able to take iron and that as would be expected complicates my treatment.  Can a minor deteriorate, to another category, or  would that come about from a misdiagnosis?

I wonder about it, not just for myself, but members of my family ( only seems to affect the females for some reason or other), who never were bothered by symptoms now have developed major symptoms.  I suspect menopause highly contributes.  But in other situations where menopause is not present, I am now hearing of symptoms and problems in varying family members living in different places.  I stress that they live in different places because they are exposed to different climates, lifestyles and diets, and I therefore can find no common link that would cause so many female family members to be reporting problems.  Its as if the gene was dorment and something triggered a reaction.  Any guesses, or have you heard of anything like that before?

Actually, I cannot think of a single male member of my family who is affected.

Any product made from blood would be high in iron even without adding iron. B complex and vitamin D may also be of some use in raising your energy level.

One cannot become a different category in regards to an inherited disorder like thalassemia. You are what you are born as and nothing can change that. However, as you have already experienced, diagnosis can be wrong or incomplete. Your thal minor was not discovered until later in life and it is quite possible that you also carry another genetic factor such as hemoglobin C. This could result in a lower Hb than what is normal for a minor, so if you do undergo anymore pricking with needles for blood, the test should be a DNA test to test for exactly what hemoglobin gene mutations you have. This would shed much light on your case. I think female thal minors might sometimes have lower Hb levels because they lose blood during their monthly cycles. I am sure menopause can also be a factor as there are so many changes in the body during menopause. Changes in hormones have great effects and this may be a factor in why your condition has worsened in recent years. A strong nutritional program and regular exercise can both help.

Hi Andy,

I have BTM.    I was born in Hong Kong.  I always feel weak even when I was a child.  I was a low birthweight preemie and had asthma when I was 3.  I am 42 now.  I had blood drawn during hospital stay every time when I had asthma attack as a child.  I was not diagnosed until I was 30 after I arrived to US.  Is it because there were too many things going on when I was young, that's why they'd never found it found.  Or my BTM really come at 30?

Teresa.

Hi Teresa,

You are born with thalassemia trait. The main way that thalassemia trait is discovered is through blood tests at birth. However, testing is a more recent development in the countries that do test. In Hong Kong, they do now test at birth but did not when you were born. If not tested for at birth, it won't be found unless either it is being looked for, or a lab technician notices the small red blood cells in your blood during any blood test. Most thal minors in the world are not aware of their status, so not knowing isn't unusual.

It's a really strange name. It sounds german, but chien is French for dog

I use google (like you did, I think), but I think you spelled the name wrong.

Aren't you talking about Desmonds Syrup of Haemoglobin?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=nl&q=Desmonds+Syrup+of+Haemoglobin&btnG=Zoeken&lr=

The info says that it is a treatment for anemia with lack of iron.....

Good luck, and please give me (us) more information about this! :)
