An Update
« on: October 16, 2008, 05:41:01 PM »
Hello all,

We thought an update would be nice, since my daughter's ferriscan result came excellent. Last year her liver iron content was 12gm as per ferriscan and it came to 4.2gm this year. The average or safe for thalassemia major is 7gm. The doctor specified that this is the best we can expect. She is still on Exjade and the dosage remains the same. They don't want to drop it further so another ferriscan is due in six months time. The normal person carries a 2-3gm. Andy, I don't remember that what this number represents, if you could help.

Also, the electoretinogram result came better this time, (it was abnormal in April 2008). Although its still not normal but improving and the next electroretinogram is due in six months as well. Hearing results came normal after a long time. Exjade seems to be working well for her and desferal side effects infact seems to be reversing.

Regards.

I believe the measurement is mg/per gram dry weight. 4.2 would be a very good range and actually, the lower limit for a chelating patient is 3.2, so this is well within the safe range. A drop below 3.2 would indicate that chelation needs to be reduced or stopped altogether for a period. The eye exam news is good. Is her hearing also improved?

To see the Ferriscan chart on what liver iron levels mean, see the site Sylvia posted recently, at http://content.resonancehealth.com/000345.pdf

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Hi Andy,

Yes, actually after three consecitive hearing test we went for the ear waxing and the fourth time she passed the test. This is another clue for people if they are having constant hearing problem, go for the waxing and repeat the test.

Thanks for the link, it helps.
Regards.

Canadian Family,

That sounds like great news.  Wishing your little one continued good health  :hugfriend  What a relief it is to get their iron levels within the normal range, also glad to know about her hearing:)   Things seem to be going well with the Exjade.

Best,

Sharmin

Hi Canadian Family

I'm glad the FerriScan results came out well for your little girl. As what Andy said, her LIC of 4.2 is within the healthy range of a thal patient.

I presume your little girl is being treated at the SickKid hospital in Toronto. The doctors there are doing a great job, especially putting in patient applications for a funded FerriScan. I can imagine it is a tedious task as there are so many patients being seen there.

I'm sure she is in good hands with good management and regular LIC assessment at the clinic. Let me know if you need any further information on FerriScan

Kind regards
Sylvia
