Hi,

Mix it with apple or orange juice. Infact it is recommended to be mixed with apple or orange juice. The amount of juice depends with the dosage of exjade.
Regards.

†Doses of <1 gram should be dispersed (mixed) in 3.7 ounces of liquid and doses ≥1 gram should be dispersed in 7.0 ounces of liquid.

The link below provide some insight as how to prepare and take exjade.

Note: Drink lots of water/liquids during the day.

Really, whatever goes. After lengthy discussion with doctors and nurses, we reckon it is better to let the pills go in than not. As for my son, he chews them with small chocolate biscuits. Works well. He gags if it is in liquid because it doesn't get disolve completely. Better to be on empty stomach, but as long as it is not after a full meal, it is ok. Full meal just increase the risk of vomitting out when taking the pills.

I guess the point is to have enough medium to take the medicine in and have it easily processed by the digestive system. If there was a fix rule for water then they would have made it in a suspension form like some antibitotics where you have to fill the bottle containing the powder, with water up to the mark.

If deserts are doing the job then that's good enough too.

Do you mean your child chews the exjade tablets instead of letting them dissolve in juice? i thought it could not be done?

I am glad that exjade is working for your child.

You may wish to confirm this with your own doctor, but we were told that exjade is very readily and rapidly broken down in other substances - that is why it is best to take it on an empty stomach and to not have food for half an hour after taking Exjade.

Orange juice, apple juice and water are (according to our doctor in Oakland) the only substances in which it is okay to mix Exjade at this time because the exjade is not broken down AS quickly in these mediums.  That being said, we were told not to allow the exjade to sit too long in the orange juice because the orange juice would also eventually break down the Exjade.  They warned us to not have him chew the tablets - they told us to dissolve them in the juice or H2O.  They also reminded us numerous times that his stomach should be empty.....

I hope you will check this with your health care providers.  My son is old enough to drink the exjade in orange juice, I'm sure it is a struggle with the younger ones.  Best of luck.

Sharmin,

Your doctor has mentioned it right.

How should EXJADE be taken?
The bioavailability of deferasirox was increased to a variable extent when taken along with food. EXJADE must therefore be taken once daily on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before food, preferably at the same time each day. The tablets are dispersed by stirring in a glass of water, orange juice, or apple juice (100-200 mL) until a fine suspension is obtained. Dispersion in carbonated drinks or milk is not recommended due to foaming and slow dispersion, respectively. After the suspension has been swallowed, any residue must be resuspended in a small volume of water or juice and swallowed. The tablets must not be chewed or swallowed whole.
