Simple signs of Osteoproseis
« on: November 03, 2008, 11:51:20 PM »
The usage of DEXA is limited to certain age cause age reference is important to get your results. I did the DEXA once to my son but there is no age reference for him. So until i can have a result, does anybody have an idea about

What are the signs of Osteoproseis?? Signs that a mother can detect? At what age is it easy to get Osteoproseis, does chances increase before puberty or it is not a must? Is it reversible????

One last thing, is  Osteoproseis in thal patients is the same as non thal patients?? My reason for this question is that Oseoproseis happenes in thal due to unknown factors that doctors don't know all of them!!!!!!!

Manal,

As much as searched for signs of osteoporosis, every site mentions that there are no early signs of osteoporosis,it is often diagnosed at later stages when a person gets a bone fracture.Check these links they might be useful.

http://womenshealth.suite101.com/article.cfm/osteoporosis_symptoms

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/o/osteoporosis/symptoms.htm#symptom_list

http://www.medicinenet.com/osteoporosis/article.htm

Taking calcium, magnesium and vitamin D can prevent osteoporosis, but since we are talking about thalassemics, the situation might be a bit complicated, may be members who have osteoporosis can guide us a little about it,let's see what Andy and Sharmin has to say about this.

Zaini.

Manal,

Has Ahmad had a bone age test done?  These tests can pick up demineralization and any bone abnormalities.  It is simply an x-ray - but it should be interpreted by a thalassemia specialist.

Thanks Zaini

Sharmin, when Ahmad was 5.2 years, we did him a bone age and it was for a child of 3.6 to 4 years according to the Radiographic Atlas of Skeletal Development of the Hand and Wrist by Greulich W.W and Pyle S.I. ( 2nd ed). This was the only thing mentioned in the report.

At that time the endocrinologist said that in chronic diseases, it is accepted to have - 2 years of bone age, but if it exceeds -2 years, transfusion should start.

Hi,

Bone density test should be done every year as a precaution. Calcium and vitamin D combined with physical activity can reduce the chances of osteoprosis.
Regards.

Hi Canadian Family,

Yes what you said is true but unfortunetly what i learned in Singapore conference is that there are other factors that cause Osteoproseis in thal even with having normal range of calcium, vitamin D. Absence of exercise and minerals increases the  chances but their presence does not gurantee that you are far from Osteoprosis :wah

Hi Manal ,
1) when i got Osteoprosis ,i was a big gamer on Computer and i were spent 5 ,5 hours long sessions on computer while playing game , sitting on chair  , no walk , no exercise  and staying still .No cricket, no outdoor game ( no outdoor game mean's no sun and no vit-D as well ) nothing else , it remain's same for the 3 months , during all these i start feeling pain in my knees and ankles , then local docs started pain killers, vitamins & minerals in my the treatment ... but when ever i missed pain killer , pain came back , it took a long time and taking pain killers for long time ,last a bad effect on my stomach ....

2) my doc ( Dr.joveria Manan who is my doc sine last two years and God sent him like an angel , as i mentioned in my several previous posts ) said that , not to sit for a long time keep moving as much you can and do some light exercises ( for which she sent me to Phsyiotherapist and he told me some light exercises for knees and ankle and back), do not to sticked with TV or computer more than one hour .. keep walking, and have sun light for at-least 30 minutes everyday and vitamin-d tablets  and some other supplements ........

3) she told me the reason of osteoprosis , that is , your (for both thals and non-thals ) bones are releasing calcium everytime , especialy when you are  siting and not doing anything  your bones  , exercise makes, walk and keeping your self busy with doing something make that proccess slow ...

4) my opinio is ,thals and their parents think that taking more rest will increase the gap between the Txs , it could be  .. but its danger indeed for the bones ... soo keep moving and make a routine of doing light exercises could prevent the complications like Osteoprosis ...

5) Simple Signs of Osteoprosis : humm you can check it by pressing leg bone with your finger  if the bone got the sign of your finger its mean that bones are soft and this is wat happened in Osteoprosis (  soft and weak bones ) soft and weak bones could change their shape easily bcoze of weight of the patient and the stress .... soo i think it is the simplest one way to diagnose it at home .... ( its my personal/own idea dont but i think it will work ) .. if you find something in it then you may have a BMD test ( Bone Mineral Density ) to confirm it ..

Sometimes , God breaks our spirit to save our soul.
Sometimes , He breaks our heart to make us whole.
Sometimes , He sends us pain so we can be stronger.
Sometimes , He sends us failure so we can be humble.
Sometimes , He sends us illness so we can take better care of our selves.
Sometimes , He takes everything away from us so we can learn the value of everything we have.

Hi buddies ,
Sorry , i forgot to mention some points ,

1) backache could be first sign of Osteoprosis ..

2) if i m not wrong, Osteoprosis is more common in both thals and non-thal womens than the men , soo womens should keep good track of BMD (Both : Bone Mineral Density & Bone Mass Density) ....

i m stil searching o this topic , i will share the results of my research with you if i got something useful ...

Umair

Added this line : BMD (Both : Bone Mineral Density & Bone Mass Density)  .....

Is this the right topic?

I am totally stress since days due everything that is happening including my very important exams (and I answered the heaviest question wrong; I just know that since a few hours). Exams take 4 weeks to become marks. I got one assignment to finish so soon as possible (read monday was the deadline); 1 exam from 5-7:30PM thursday and 10-12:30AM friday morning the second and the last and third at monday from 4-6:30PM. And somehow I just cannot get destressed.

I also I suffer from leg cramps since a month. They have become unbearable at night so I sleep only a few hours because of a working pain killer. I have taken yesterday and today 2 tablets of vitd/calcium/magnesium: I am afraid I cannot find those tablets now. No idea how much these contain of three. Here I got it: vit 5 ug / 100% (daily); calcium 400mg 50% (daily) magnesium 150mg (40% (daily).

I must add that I have not take proper chelation since Christmas, Last year these times I took 1500mg and the first 2 months and 1 week of this year I took 125mg. Since then I have not take anything.

I have had a dexa 2 or 3 years ago and was diagnosed with osteopenia. I never take my vit D. Rarely. I havent excercise a lot due my bike being broke. For 3 months but I can pick it up (and pay the bill) tomorrow.

Until my age of 16 my deironing treatment was very low and I experience this unbearable pain too. Maybe it is not leg cramps. My knees hurt the most now.

I know I must restart deironing, but I do not know how.

My grammar is low due study stress
