If she hasn't had a lot of transfusions, 1200 might be an accurate score, and this can be reduced without chemical chelating drugs. Drinking tea and taking IP6 can also help to lower the iron load. However, if she has had a lot of transfusions over the years, it would be wise for her to have a liver scan to determine if there is any iron load in the organs. At her age and with a ferritin of only 1200 it may be safe to assume she does not have any serious iron absorption problem from her diet.
