Who does your pump for you?  Or do you do it yourself?

I’ve been using my pump since I was 8 and my mother did it for me.  Then at 13 I was taught how to do it myself.  I found it was better as I knew when the butterfly went in and I stopped flinching.

Just curious on others peoples experiences on this?

:biggrin I'm just too lame to do it myself as my hands start shaking when the needle starts to prick! I can't even see others get pricked in the hospital. I'm just too soft hearted!

I have to go to a doctor's clinic to get the job done

Well interesting subject.........When I first started the injections,  my mom use to make it up for me and inject me, I hated the thought of doing it and use to flinch and carry on.

However as time went on and in my early teens I was tought by the older patients in our clinic how to do my injection so I got my mom to make it for me and I would put it in.

When I started going to clubs the deal was go out come home put the pump on, so I would come home find the injection ready under my pillow and depending how I was feeling depended if i wore it or not. Most times I would wear it.

Now days I make and inject but if I'm tired my husband makes it for me.

I have been on Desferal since I was around 5 years old.  My mother did it for the first couple of years, and then I took over from there.  I think I was around 6 or 7 when I started doing it myself.  It was easier, as Flower said, knowing when the needle was going in and not flinching.   :biggrin

I feel kinda stupid saying this after being 25 years old, but here it goes :winky

 :yahoo :woot :jumping

Last night I did my Desferal by myself in front of my cousin who is a doctor and he gave me an acknowledgement/clearance that I can do it myself perfectly. So now I have proved to my mom that she was worried all those years for nothing!

I have to admit that this forum is the main reason for boosting my confidence and I felt really silly knowing that most of the members are doing this themselves since childhood. So all you guys deserve a :

BIG Thank You!

Sajid,

I'm so proud of you!

Congratulations

It takes a lot of courage for someone to start doing their Desferal by themselves and I’m glad you found yours!

Well I started wearing my pump when I was 9yrs old...I was shown how to mix and put the needle on by the nurse at the hospital...

I did make my pump on my own but my mother did put the needle in untill I was about 18...Yes I was 18 when I started wearing it by myself..Its not that I couldnt do it..It was all the lumps I used to get when I tried to put it on myself..I suppose my mother had the magic touch...

I have even worn my pump out a few times..and yes when I was going out and had to put it on when i came home I used to get the odd body search from my mother...lol

I have only in the last 8 months not worn it cause I am on L1 and doing very well on it...Without any side effects from the deferiprone as well..

Sajid Thats a big step...I am happy for you!!! Keep up the good work in the end it pays...

Hope you are all well
Take care

Thanks :biggrin

It wasn't so bad at all. Just make a pinch of skin and insert the needle from the side. As soon as you feel that after the needle has penetrated the outer harder skin layer and now is in the softer layer, try to keep it in that softer layer and avoid going deeper to the muscle.

This is something that I couldn't tell when the doc used to do it. Now amazingly ever since I've been doing like this on my own; I haven't got a painful swelling yet!

Call it a beginner's luck or what?  :winky :thumbsup
