Owh, I forgot to tell you. but my tummy hurted for years. We talk about the years between 10 and 17 year. I have had even strange painkillers which I refused to take, because docs did not take me serious. It might be even earlier, but I have suppress some details of my journey.

Good luck Little Miss A !!!!

i was on painkillers for a long time , when i was on wheel chair .. i stopped to take painkillers bcoze of stomach , using painkillers for couple of years developed ulceer soewhere in my  abdomin ... i gues it was in intestine , my doc prescripted me Zantac at that time .. i mentioned this all bcoze i wana say that i was feeling that ulcer pain on my lower left side of my tummy ...  and here is something from topic " exjade label change "

http://www.thalassemiapatientsandfriends.com/index.php?topic=2582.0;highlight=exjade+label

Quote
Abdominal pain occurs with many medications and can be a side effect in many patients on Exjade.  Clues of gastritis (irritation of the stomach) or ulcer (a hole in the inner lining of the stomach or small intestine) include a dull, gnawing or burning pain in the upper mid- or upper left abdomen, relieved by eating or by antacids (Tums, prilosec, Zantac, etc).  Clues to a bleeding ulcer might also include vomiting red blood or dark brown “coffee grounds”, and black tarry stools or blood in the stool. Light-headedness, pallor or fainting with severe abdominal pain should lead to immediate emergency evaluation.
A common cause of ulcers without medications is a bacterial infection called “H Pylori”. Contrary to old medical beliefs, spicy foods don’t cause ulcers. Medications well known to cause ulcers, including risk of serious bleeding, include prednisone and other steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.,e.g. ibuprofen (advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), asprin.  Fosamax and other bisphosphonates are severely irritating to stomach and esophagus. Stress, cigarette smoking and  alcohol consumption all increase the risk of gastritis and ulcers. Blood thinners (warfarin, lovenox, etc) raise the risk of serious bleeding if an ulcer does occur.

Praying for her good healt , may God bless her with the best of the health in soon future ....

Best Regards

Canadian Family,

I do suspect that your daughter's stomach related issues are an aftermath of the stomach related illness she had in the fall rather than exjade itself.  However, once her stomach was irritated exjade may play a role in continuing to upset her stomach and for that reason it may help you to divide her dose into two doses.

I still think that raising her bed and giving her frequent small meals with also help in the long run because there may be an element of acid reflux existing due to her earlier illness.  (Does she clear her throat often?).  I think that with the various ideas everyone has listed here, that her stomach will continue to settle and her digestion will improve.

My son's stomach was upset when he was given his first dose of IVIG - he had a strong reaction to it resulting in headaches and severe nausea (early July 2008).  He was unable to eat for days and he would vomit even if we gave him water.  It took several weeks for his stomach to return to normal.   It took months for his apetite to completely return to normal and I he would get queasy quite quickly even months after this episode.  We began exjade several weeks after this reaction - and I wonder if the exjade possibly added to the whole equation.

Over time things did settle and he seems to be eating and drinking like normal now.  Studies are being done to see if certain foods can be taken with exjade without altering it's effectiveness.  These studies are not yet complete, but once they are it would be nice to be able to give exjade with food.

Best wishes to our little Miss A.

Sharmin (mom of little Mr. A :))

Sharmin,

I agree with you. We have already alter the timing of exjade dose to the evening, however, splitting the dose has a technical problem. Since little Miss A. is on calcium rich food and supplements, and we know calcium rich food is not good within 3 hours (before and after) with exjade, this leaves us very little timeframe to give her what she needs for her osteoporosis.

The frequent small meals are working fine so far. We did got a call from the Thal Clinic yesterday and the nurse is getting the appointment with GI specialist to investigate further.

CF,

I have not heard back from the person I emailed about Exjade. It is very frustrating to me that people who are very active in thal associations can't be bothered to give some advice to help a little girl. Again I wonder if there is any reason at all for me to get involved with thal associations, as they mostly seem to be little cliques that don't give a damn about anyone else. It isn't just frustrating. It's quite disillusioning.

I do hope the adjustments are helping her overcome the nausea.

Andy,

Thanks for the message. Yes we do understand your concerns and it ticks me off too sometimes. I had send numerous emails to Thalassemia society of Canada (five years ago) with no response from them.

Little Miss A. is doing fine again. She is making an effort to eat more frequent small meals, we are careful not to force her too much as well.

Andy,

Before coming to this site I had sent numerous messages to all of the thalassemia societies, telling them how afraid I was of my son's antibody issues.  I did not receive any responses, you were the first person to care about him and help us get answers.  It makes me wonder what their fancy websites are for  ??? ???

CF,

Thank you for understanding. I often make the mistake of thinking that because someone is involved with a thal association that it means they are concerned about other thals, and far too often this is proven wrong. I think this is a big reason why our group is so popular. We do care and do try to help. The members here deserve a big pat on the back for taking the time to help others.   :thumbs

Can I make a suggestion!!!!

What is your daughters potassium level?

As everyone else had their say!!! lol

I'd like to as well, since being on all the chelators and the only one I can take is desferal!!!

Now with exjade! As some have said you can  take it in the evening on an empty stomach so before her dinner is a great idea, then waiting the half hour...

I did try that too, cause I have an ulcer I couldnt take it in the morning...
They do say the side effects do subside, but i am alittle sceptical...

I had to stop taking exjade cause of the drop in my potassium and the severe diohrrea it caused.. I actually lost alof of weight from it...

Please let me know what the little ones potassium level is?

Thank you...

Hi Smurfette,

As far as we know, Little Miss A's potassium is normal. I don't remember the number but it was last checked just two weeks ago. She is taking calcium tablets with potassium and other traces of elemnets for bone density so we have no reason to believe she is deficient.

You mentioned diohrrea, she is not having this symptom either. We are waiting for GI appointment to see if there is a problem there.

Thanks....
Regards.
