Vitamins and Minerals for non thals and thal minors.
« on: January 11, 2009, 09:50:58 AM »
Hi,

As we all know about the importance of supplements and vitamins for thals, but what i want to ask is ,are these supplements or vitamins necassary for non-thals too, like i have a son who does not carry thal trait,Sharmin has a daughter who does not carry thal trait,so are all vitamins and minerals in supplements form,as necessary for them as our thal kids,or thal minors.Currently i am giving my son a multivitamin "Starvits" which contains Vitamin A,D,C,B1,B2,B6,B12 and Folic acid.Is this enough?
My sister also doen not carry thal trait, but when ever i try to convince her to take multivitamins and minerals, she always says "how do i know my body needs them, what if i am getting enough of them through my food" i really don't know the answer to this, although she is nursing her baby.
My mom is a thal minor like me,she looks pale always, never tested her hb,she started taking small amount of ironĀ  in her multivitamin ,theragran (m or h i don't remember) on doc's prescription years ago, when she didn't know she had thal, she is still taking it,although i have tried to convince her that being a thal minor she might not need iron, for calcium she is taking Osnate 800 which does not contain any Vitamin D,or Magnesium.when ever i mention any other supplement she says you should not be taking anything with out doc's prescription. Is it necessary to consult a doc before starting any vitamin or supplement, most of docs don't understand thal minor much and aren't much helpful.
My questions are,is this multivitamin enough for my non thal son?
Should non thals be taking multivitamins daily?
How can i convince my mom to change her supplements?

Any ideas?

Zaini.

Zaini

Concerning our non thal children, I personally believe that as long as children eat a really well balanced food, have all their fresh juice, vegtables, fruits..... they are not in need for a multivitamin.

Personally i give my daughter a multivitamin when i feel that she is not eating well and i stop it when i know she isgetting all what she needs.

At the age of 10 it is preferable to give calcium (I give Osteocare) because the body needs its for the bones in preparation for puberity

What i give to both my children is the omega 3-6-9 either the chewables or sometime i give the cod liver oil. In winter i sometimes give vitamin C only

My point is that i don't give on regular basis as long as food intake is sufficinet, ijust give on and off since at the end multivitamin are chemicals that contain insoluble vitamins that when taken with no need overloads in the liver. At some point in my daughter life when she was not eating well i stick to the multivitamin daily

That is what i do
