Waiting to find out if 3yr old has Thalassemia

Hi we are in Australia and we have been waiting for 6 days to get results back to see if our little boy has Thalassemia.
He has duplex kidneys and it was noticed in his blood tests that his cells were small and we have been unable to cure his anemia. He a small, sickly thin little boy and since birth I have been asking for tests to be done.

When we finally found out that he had duplex kidneys with grade 5 reflux he was close to death. We thought finally we had answers, now the doctors are positive that he has thalassemia as well.

I am so glad that I have found this wonderful site that has answers to many of our questions.

  , i hope that you will be fine .. i hope, wish and pray that your son will be fine , and he wil not be a Thal kid ... i hope and wish that doctors are mistaking to diagnose your son's condition and they will be wrong to say that he is a Thal ..... i hope you wil find this forum and its member , very caring , helping and encouraging .. i mnot an experty of site but,  i hope that our Expertiees wil help you with their great ealth of knowledge, and i hpe that you will find all the answers of  your concerns/questions vey soon..  Keep posting and stay in-touch with us . dont hesitate to share anything you want to share on this forum e.g info experience etc..etc...  feel free to ask wat is in your mind...  keep asking and keep knowing about thalassemia ..

We got the results back and it is all good, they have not ruled out Thal minor. I don't understand fully how come they can't tell us that for sure.

The following is the pathology report

Haemoglobin 120g/L
Red Cell Count  5.0 x10*12/L
Haematocrit 0.36
Mean Cel Volume  72 fL
Mean Cell Haemoglobin  24 pg

Haemoglobin H bodies   Negative

Haemoglobin Electrophoresis
Haemoglobin A2  2.7%
Haemoglobin F    <1.0%

Alkaline EPP Result   No abnormal band detected

Comment:
The haemoglobin A2 level is normal and no haemoglobin H bodies could be demonstrated. However in view of the microcytic red cell indices a thalassaemia trait cannot be excluded.

Our Doctors said that the microcytic red cells could be from iron deficiency or thal minor and not to worry about it until such time as he wants to have children.

?? Can a Thal minor donate blood, I don't imagine that they could. ?/

I am happy that the news are good.  At most your son has thal trait which is ok for now.  Before starting his own family though he has to be aware of his status.  You have ample time to go for the DNA test . 

I also have a son who is quite weak (as compared to other children) and he has been having health problems quite often. Last time he had Urinary tract infection and since then I am afraid for his kidneys.  His albumin tests are at times normal and sometimes show trace. 

The result you posted are similar to that of my son except for hba2 which is 3.4.  So far I do not know if my son has thal trait or not.  I believe that I will perform the DNA test in the future. 

I think that MCV < 78 and MCH<25 may point to thal trait if  the iron results are normal.  But the DNA test will confirm whether there is thal trait or not.

Welcome to the forum. To answer your question. 'Can Thal Minor donate Blood', Yes Thal Minor can donate blood as long as their Hg is more than 120. I maintain Hg of 135-140 and is a regular blood donor.
