From when I was 4 till like 15 I would sometimes have very bad foot / leg pain and sometimes couldnt hardly walk. But it went away in my later teen years. I am not sure if its thal related or not.

Leg pain is often caused by vitamin D deficiency, which is very very common in thals and non-thals alike. I would suggest having him tested to see what his D level is. I speak from personal experience on this one.

I'm amazed to read this because I had leg pain as a child.  My mom just attributed it to growing pains.  Now that I'm middle-aged, I'm having severe muscle problems.  I'm anxious to try the vitamin D remedy.

Hi!

Yes to the leg pain.  When growing up I had the worst leg pain ever.  Mainly in my knees that we said was "growing pain."  Lol.  Probably was to.

However, my mother (who also has Thal Minor) has been plagued with "restless leg syndrome" which I firmly strongly believe is related to the Thal minor she has.  And I myself have the same feeling often.  I think I read a study someplace that Thal Minor contributes to the "restless leg" the older you get.  I'll see if I can find it.

By leg pain I immediately think about iron AND about the lack of magnesium. Maybe the last for you?

I have experienced aching legs since childhood.  Perhaps us thal minors are prone to vitamin D deficiency.

I think vitamin D deficiency strikes far beyond thals. Migration patterns have taken us away from our natural areas of the world and has shifted us north where we cannot possibly get adequate vitamin D from the sun during our short lived summers. There may be some added stresses from thal minor but I believe that it has more to do with where your ancestors lived and how much exposure to the sun there is. It seems a real paradox that vitamin D helps to prevent cancer but the sun can cause cancer. How are we to get enough D if we avoid the sun? Supplements are necessary for many people.

I don't think its lack of vit D. i must have a few articles on that. As for vit D, too much of it can cause also leg pain.

It used to be thought that we can get too much vitamin D, but real life testing has showed that far more people are deficient than previously thought. I have yet to hear from anyone who is even in the upper half of the optimal range (30-80) and no one over the top limit. My own experience has been that vitamin D supplements do relieve leg pain.

I started getting the leg pain recently when my hemoglobin dropped to 8. But i also get slight chest pain and pain on the left side tummy after eating - below my ribcage.

Lying down solves the leg pain.

I have restless leg since i was a kid - i think moving my legs is a subconscious remedy for poor circulation. At times i feel like rubbing my arms too, when my BP is too low.

Symptomatic Beta Thal Minor.

I have sudden, severe pain in my feet from time to time. Lasts only about 20 seconds at a time. zapZapZApZAPzap. And then it's gone. Only happens once in awhile. Might be aging. :-\

Possibly a magnesium deficiency, also as magnesium does get depleted by the hemolysis, or destruction of red blood cells that takes place in all forms of thalassemia. Women should take a calcium/magnesium supplement in a 2:1 ratio. Something like 1000 mg calcium and 500 mg magnesium daily, along with vitamin D, so that the minerals are absorbed.
