Thank you for the update Madhavi,

Our thoughts are always with you and your family.  As Lena said, this has not been easy for you but the most difficult part is behind you - may the days ahead be progressively brighter and happier :)

Much love,

Sharmin

These are the side effects of bone marrow transplant from my point of view....

I)FOR THE CHILD
A) Physical
1)Effects of chemotherapy and medication during the transplant process
2)Constraints of confinement
3)Change of routine,habits,appetite,diet,appearance
B)Mental
1)Confinement
2)Isolation
3)Loss of privacy due to dependance
4)Irritation
5)Frustration

II)FOR THE PARENTS
A)Physical
1)Child care in isolation
2)Health changes due to that
3)Care of self in the time of physical and mental stress to ensure best care and environment for the child
B)Mental
1)Seeing child in pain
2)Being prepared to see any and everything
3)Anxiety post transplant till a decisive result is in
4)Comparison with the other patients in the ward
5)Emotional reaction to each happening and event
6)Effect on interpersonal relationships
C)Others
1)Financial strain
2)Away from work and other family during the phase of hospitalisation
3)Changes in life once the child is home for a period of 6 months to 1 year

This is what I felt and did not really come across much when I was trying to see things online before...They only focus on the medical aspects of it all....it is indeed so much more than just that....
Some more thoughts from the time I was in the hospital later.....
Madhavi
Love and luck to all...

Madhavi,

Thank you for sharing your experiences, these will be helpful to all parents who consider bmt - to take into consideration.

I hope that your experiences become more positive from here.  Please lean on us as much as you need to during this adjustment period.

Best wishes to Mohanish and your entire family,

Sharmin

Madhavi,

Thanks for sharing, definetly Mo and all the family had past through a lot.

Did the doctors talked with you about long side effects (if there are any) or things to be cautious at???

No Manal......nothing much that the doctor has told us about long term effects so far...
We got the result for the genetic/chromosomal analysis this week and it shows 100% engraftment and all cells are from the new bone marrow.....His Hb is a little low-10.8 and so we will do a Coombs test next week.
Other than that no other changes in the treatment......
Take care everyone and thanks for following up with us still.....
Love,
Madhavi
Love and luck to all...

Madhavi,

100% engraftment and cells from the new bm? that's superb! Good for Mo!
Best of luck for the future! It seems you made the right decision-which, I realise, must have been too difficult for you.

All the best-kisses to Mohanish,
Lena.

Thank you all......Lena,Manal,Abbas.....
For all those who plan a BMT, I would suggest that they first have a family like you all and then get admitted....having a huge support system like you all makes a world of difference!
Love you all guys....you are the best!
