Assessment of Puberty in Relation to L-carnitine & Hormonal Replacement Therapy

This is some extremely important research with great relevance to thalassemics in puberty or approaching puberty, with special significance to those who have delayed puberty. L-carnitine appears to play an important role in the normal sexual development of thalassemia patients. Since we alreay are aware of the importance of L-carnitine to heart function and the prevention of pulmonary hypertension, I feel that we really need to emphasize exactly how important this nutrient is to all thalassemics. Again we see the name of our friend, Dr Amal El Beshlawy as the head researcher.

Hi Andy,
this information is really usefull.my daughter firdaus is now13 yr old(thal major) and she shows no signs of puberty so far.her height doesnt seem to increase as well.Do u think i shld put her on this treatment.please tell me how do i start...thanks so much.

Hi Marziya,

You should talk to the doctor where your daughter is treated about starting hormonal replacement therapy. It is essential to start young, as waiting to the older teens yields lesser results. I would also suggest that she does take L-carnitine supplements. This needs to be addressed early on.
