Unfortunately, Aaron spiked a fever yesterday of around 100. We did give him a
teaspoon Tylenol (well, generic as regular TYlenol is still recalled) and headed
to the ped. She really looked him over carefully, as he is not fully immunized
(just home six weeks, haven't even done titers yet...) and wanted to rule out
all she could. She said there is a virus going around (here) with just a fever
and very few other symptoms. Aaron did have a headache, which could have been
from the fever.
Two hours after Tylenol, his fever had gone up to 101. The ped. suggested giving
him Advil also (two hours after having administered the Tylenol). Finally the
fever did come down (and then back up again before bed, as is often the case).
She felt it was important to get his fever down...especially as his hemoglobin may drop faster because of the
fever. Again, he is not responding to Tylenol at this point...so we felt that the ibuprofen was our other option. Now I see there are warnings against NSAIDS with Exjade...
They did check his hemoglobin, which was 10.4. Good thing he was just
transfused a week ago...although now I know it may mean an earlier transfusion
than we had planned.
So...I'm wondering, for those of you with beta thal major kids, and who are on Exjade, do you give your
kids Tylenol and Advil, or have you ever been told to avoid one?
Thanks,
Nicole
