Blood transfusion Period
« on: May 04, 2011, 03:40:37 PM »
Hi,

how are you all, I hope that every thing is great with you

I'm a 22 yrs Old , Thal Major, wwight 60 Kg

I have blood transfusion every two week or more (14-18 day) and I have 350 ml Full Blood because there is no only washed RBC where I live,

and the HB level is always  (9.8 - 11 ) ,

I want to go on trip for six weeks and I'm thinking to take more blood like taking 3 bags not in the same day but day after day before the
trip day , so I don't need Blood transfusion for a six weeks , I've read that some one his whight 59 kg and he takes 3 bags of blood each one 300 ml every
six weeks,

there is formula said that every one could have 20 ml per 1 Kg and that's mean I can take 60*20=1200 ml means 3 bags of 400 ml

I want your opinion about that is it possible and what's the complications ?

I know I've asked many time about this thing but I really need your help and this is important to me

many thanks

Joe

Hi Joe,

You can take 16ml per kg blood,so i guess you can take about 3 bags, but thats the formula for packed red cells,i don't know if transfusing whole blood changes anything.Did you discuss it with your doctor?

Zaini.

Hi Joe,
Where do you live? Maybe we can help you better or more with knowing that.
I have no clue about blood formulas as we do not use it here in the Netherlands.
Btw, happy travelling!

Hey Joe
Firstly, Happy journey and happy stay.
Actually I am new on this forum and I am so happy to read your profile detail. My brother is 26 years old and beta-thalassemia major. His height is 5.5 or 5.6 but his weight is 45kgs. He is not putting on weight since last 4-5 yeaars. He gains 1-2 kgs but as he falls sick it comes back to 45kg. Can you suggest something as how to put on weight. Also, his Hb is never more than 8.5-9.0.
Please suggest some solutions
Thank you and GOD BLESS U

Joe, are you travelling now?
Shama, has someone answered your question? What I did to put on eat was eating a lot of pasta. I was able to add a few kilos and over the years I have added more weight. It sound a bit silly but all the pasta did work.
