Ferriprox and WBC?

Hello guys, long time no see..

I'm currently using Ferriprox for iron - treatment... I've using Ferriprox for almost 2 years, at the begining I have regularly check my WBC and else, but they're all normal..

But after using for almost 2 years, now my WBC starting to fall down, this is a new result.

I've no idea what's wrong, is there any possibility of side effect? Even After taking for so long?

What should I do? my Indonesian doctors seems have no idea about ferriprox since this med isnt that famous here.

Any help / comment / post is appreciated

Yes this is a side effect of Ferrirprox and can quite serious. Have you talked with your doctor about it? Sometimes this problem resolves on it own when one quit Ferriprox. How low is your WBC and what is normal for you?

my doctor have a less idea on what's going on with me. but we're currently checking my blood, i dont know what he check actually.

and i'm going to do some scan next week, i also dont know what for. here in Indonesia we still cant do MRI scan for FE level.



I still dont get it, how come the side effect come up now? not before? i've been consuming quite a long time no?

about the result, i forgot.. i'll post that later on.

I have no idea why this problem shows up after so long time, but I am not suprised either. Hang in there and keep us (me) up to date.

anyway my WBC is 2.98 now and the normal count should be 4 - 11..

i've no idea what's my doctor ask me to check, here it is :

Coomb's Direct = Negative
Coomb's Indirect = Negative
ANA Test = Negative
LE TEST/ Latex = Negative
Retikulosit = 0.3    normal : 0.5 - 2.0
basophil -             normal 0 - 1


anyone have idea  why? or what was the test about?
i still need to wait for another ultrasound before meeting my doctor..

A low white blood cell count is one of the side effects known to occur is some users of deferiprone (Ferriprox, Kelfer). Neutropenia can occur and depending on how low the white cell count has dropped, either a temporary reduction in dosage or temporary cessation altogether is recommended when this occurs. Once the white cell count is normalized, the drug can be started again. When a severe drop occurs, agranulocytosis, the drug should be stopped altogether. Not enough information is available to recommend re-challenging a patient with deferiprone once agranulocytosis. has taken place, and another chelator should be used.

Your white cell count is lower than normal, but not dangerously so. Either a temporary cessation or at least a reduction in daily dose should be taken until the level restores. This is a common side effect of deferiprone, but when managed properly, the drug can be continued as long as the white cell level is restored.

Ferriprox can cause low white cells: Are monocytes part of those white cells and should one be awake when there is some visible drop in those? Leuco are stable (only a little higher). There is no connection between mono and rbc's right? (these were lower than for the last 10 months) Thank you in advance, -D
