Please Help

Hi, I am new here and I'm looking for some advise if anybody could please help?

I have been browsing the internet as my 5yr old son is a fussy eater and I came across Thalassaemia and everything seemed to make sence.
My ex husband is from north africa and when my son was 3 I noticed he was starting to get a bald patch on his head and his scalp was quite yellow, I went straight to my gp who reffered him to hospital. My sons growth is very slow and is quite small for his age.

His doctor at hospital did tests and said iron in his blood cells was very low and he prescribed him iron supplements then discharged him from hospital. I have always felt that something was wrong as his hair is still not right.

Is it possible he has Thalassaemia minor and what is the best way to approach my gp. All the symtoms my son has seem to match. He is a very fussy eater since he was a baby. What are the best vitamins I can give him??

Please if anyone could give me some advise, I would really appreciate it?

Hello Elaine,

Do you happen to know what the Hemoglobin levels were when the blood test was done? Also, if you have the reports could you see if the RBC values are in range?

Hi, thanks for your reply. The doctor did not give me any of the results he just told me that the iron in his cells were low. I am going to go back to the doctor. Could you give me advise in what I should ask the doctor for? Please that would be great.

Elaine,

Ask for a copy of the results. The explanation of low iron in cells is an extremely unusual statement and I don't believe I have ever heard it stated this way. Is the doctor saying the hematocrit is low or was an iron panel run? Low hematocrit may have nothing to do with iron if thal minor is involved. It's best to find out more before subjecting your child to iron if it is not needed.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.
