monitoring iron levels

Hi everyone!
I'm just wondering what tests do you use for monitoring iron levels in blood of thal intermedias? Does the CBC do the job?

Also, what is considered "normal"? And what is considered "too high"?

For intermedias, around what age to people generally start seeing iron overload and start chelating? Do I need to worry about my 3 yr old son if he is not transfusing yet? His hb is pretty low 7-8, but no transfusions yet.

And finally, about the Ferriscan...do you only do this test after noting high iron levels, or do all thals do this yearly regardless of their iron levels?

Thanks for your help! I just want to make sure I'm getting him properly monitored until I can find a specialist who can answer these questions for me!

thanks again  :hugfriend
