Thal Minor and mountain visits
« on: August 10, 2011, 10:03:24 AM »
Hi,
I just joined this forum and I am glad I finally found people who understan what I go through everyday. I have been living with Thal Minor not knowing that most of the symptoms I have are due to it. It's just so weird how ignorant doctors are about it and how careless they are. I have been visiting all kinds of doctors, doing all kinds of blood tests. they would just dismiss the fact that I have Thal Minor and start improvising.people around me always complain from me being continuously tired, they even blame me for that saying it's all in my head.
The symptoms have grown upon me and affect me on a day to day basis.. I have a general feeling of being ill, and fatigue is killing me. The weather is so hot now and humid, and it's really getting worse. I also feel extremely tired and lost  when i go to the mountain, which I have to do every weekend. I really don't understand why??if someone would explain it to me and how to avoid it or reduce that feeling...

Hi Nadine,
I have hiked up steep trails a fair amount of times.  At first it was really hard on me but I've learned that I need a lot of water.  A lot more water than everyone else!  While everyone else takes a small drink of water every half hour or so (or less!!), I am almost constantly drinking water (I hate to hike without a hydration pack now) because it's the only thing that helps keep me going.  And after reading information from this forum, I've learned it may be a good idea to add salt/electrolytes to my water too!  I can only speak for my own experience in what helps keep me going when I hike up mountains and hopefully others will chime in because I am curious how they have dealt with this as well.  Hope this helps a little bit for your mountain trips!

Thanx a lot for your advice. I will surely try this and really hope it works with me coz going up to the mountains is something I have to deal with every weekend.

HI,

WHILE READING YOUR POST FOR ONE MOMENT, I THOUGHT I HAD WRITTEN IT :)  LAST TIME I WENT HIKING I WAS "THE TURTLE" OF THE GROUP AND MADE EVERYONE WAIT FOR ME BECAUSE I COULDN'T MOVE FASTER. ANYWAY, I HAVE SEEN THAT EATING WELL BEFORE HIKING AND DRINKING WATER EVERY TIME I'M FEELING THIRSTY HELPS ME A LOT.

P.S: HAVE YOU EVER FELT LIKE YOU CAN'T BREATH WHILE WALKING OR AT REST?

Hi anisa,
Well you are asolutely right about feeling breathless while walking or at rest. I just feel I want to faint and sometimes imagine myself while walking as falling down on the floor. It's so annoying. And you know what, the symptoms of tiredness, extreme fatigue, heavy head, are someting I have to deal with not only while hiking, but also during a normal visit to the mountain which I have to do every weekend. However, I was advised to get an oxygen boost whenever I feel the symptoms by inhaling some oxygen. I was wondering if this would help.

I only see difficulties in the winter - when the clothes and backpacks are heavy and tight around my body and there's snow and/or mud. If I go hiking in the summer I have no big problems up to 2500m (8200 ft). Of course I need more rest than the others after that and probably won't be able to fully recover for the next day.
