Hi.......I'm new here.
« on: September 24, 2007, 07:28:12 AM »
Hello everyone. I am new here but I guess sooner or later we'll all be friends. I am a mom of 3. I have a daughter who is a Thalassemia Major since aged 4 mths. As far as I can remember........at first she has been having fever every now & then but we thought it was normal. But as the months go by, fever kept coming back and she looked pale so we brought her for check-up at a baby specialist centre. After blood test was done on her, we got the results from the doctor my daughter's hb was only 3.0. The doctor told us that she has to be admitted immediately for transfusion. I felt like the world just collapsed on me and I wanted to cry but tears just got choked in my throat. I didn't know what to do, where to go, whom to confide in. From that day onwards, for almost 3 years I couldn't accept the fact that my daughter (Trefe) has Thalassemia Major and everytime I tell someone about her illness I would surely cry. Luckily for some friends' consolation that I manage to pull myself together and began to accept my daughter's fate. She is now 11 and has been having complete blood transfusion every month ever since. Although she misses class a lot of times for appointments and transfusions, she does quite well in school and she did get high marks in English and got 2nd in class when she was in Primary 2 & 3. I am proud of her though sometimes she gets on my nerves because she is so talkative. I guess God must have a reason for giving us a 'special' child. The only thing that worries me is that whenever she tries to clean her nose, it will bleed. We had her check by the doctors in the hospital but there say it's normal eps. when the weather is hot. Cee (Malaysia).

Hi Cee,

Welcome to the forum !! It's great having more people here.

Medical practices have advanced so much over the years that thals have as good a chance as anybody so you dont need to worry. So dry up those tears and wander around in the forum archives where you'll find a wealth of information regarding Thal and how people have overcome the disease by leading very normal lives.

Take care,

Zaid

Welcome to the forum. Looks like your daughter is just like mine  :rotfl  :rotfl, My daughter is so talkative that she says the other day "Mom, I am tired of talking but I want to talk". Yep!! Nothing can stop her at the age of 4.
Regards.

Hi Cee,
welcome to the group,Its great you have found us here to gain support & friendship,it truly is a great comfort!
I have thal major myself i am in my late 20s now,i know as a parent it must have been hard for you
to accept your daughter as thal & see her go through all the pain of needles & transfusions,But with the right treatment such as transfusions monthly & now we have the oral chelators such as L1/kelffer or exjade this helps minimise the pain of more needles.which we didnt have 10 years ago.
Try to think postive you & your daughter will be fine.take care, wishing you all the best.
