Prenatal Test
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:44:48 AM »
Hi All,

Please someone advice me on which test needs to be done to check if the unborn  child is thal or no.

I have visited quite a few docs and here is what I understand

1) First we need to do a Gene test of child(Thal major), father and mother to excatly check which gene is actually defective.
These report will take 2 weeks of time.

2) Second they will do the chorionic villus sampling (CVS) test in the 12th week of pregnancy to check if unborn child is affected. this report will take 3 weeks.

Cost of 1 and 2 is around 18000.

3)Third is Aneuploidy Test if the child is not Thal major. Not aware of why this test and time frame of the report and cost.

4) HLA typing and matching of the unborn and affected child and this report will take another 3 weeks. Cost is 20000.

By the time all the reports are done the mother is already around 18 weeks anyways I wanted someone to tell me if there is any place where these reports can be got faster specially the CVS report. I have heard that CMC in Vellore gives it in 1 week time and they do the 1 and 2 procedure together. Is anyone aware of this or any other hospital.

Looking forward for a positive reply. thank u.

Hello Binita,

Go for CVS......

and you are true for at 9-10 week do the mutation test and at 12 week do the CVS...

Yes if you are going to vellore then try to send the blood sample for mutation at 9-10 week because by the time of 12 week if mutation was done...it will take 1 week in Vellore.....for CVS....but there is little possibility in CVS that mother cell should not be come while cvs else you have to do cvs again...

and most important my request is to go for CVS only...dont go for aminocytosis.....

any question please reply back to me....

1) Finding the exact mutation test on child/father/mother can be done anytime. I would suggest sooner the better. We got this done in US with Quest Diagnostics lab. Result for my wife came back in 2 weeks because the mutation was easier to find. But it took an additional test (deletion analysis) to find my mutation. It took a total of 4 weeks for the lab to find my mutation.

2) This also depends on the mutation. For us, it took Quest 5 weeks since my mutation needed further analysis.

We got Amniocentesis done at 16th week and by the time all the results came back it was already 22nd week. In retrospect, I think CVS is better because you gets results earlier.

I don't know much about CMC in Vellore. Maybe they can get the results back faster.

Thank you Parin and Sumit for your reply.

I visited CMC Vellore and they collected samples of mother, father and child for the Gene mutation and they said report will be ready within 5 days. And then I need to go for CVS which they will take 4 days for the report. The total cost will come upto 17000.

So CMC is faster and cost effective too. But after this we need to go to Delhi for the HLA typing and matching of the unborn and affected child and this report will take another 3 weeks or less not sure. Cost is 20000 or more.

Thank you once again.

wow, CMC Vellore can do the test that quickly ? specially, CVS results in 5 days is really very quick.

I wonder why Quest Labs takes that long (4-6 weeks) for such important time critical tests.

anyways, good luck! and keep us posted.

One more thing to know is that it is important to pick a doctor who has lots of experience in CVS procedure. Here in US, there are many doctors in every city who perform Amniocentesis but very few in every city who perform CVS.
