Cost of screening/tests/couseling?
« on: March 29, 2012, 05:09:44 PM »
I was wondering if anyone could share their experience of the cost of DNA sequencing/screening for thalassemia in the US? Our insurance told us that if the test is deemed medically necessary then it will be covered, but worse case scenario is they don't pay a cent. Does anyone know what that initial screening for jus the patient may cost without insurance coverage? Is it the same for parent testing?

Thanks for any input,
Sarah

In case any one else has this question, I thought I could provide a little bit of info now that we have had some testing completed. I am sure there are vast differences between labs, ins companies, etc. in the US, but our experience was WITH insurance the cost of hemoglobin electrophoresis was less than $200, I thought it would be much more, so that was a pleasant surprise, dna sequencing of course is much more and I think (after looking it up many times) ranges from $1500-2500 for the most common mutations/deletions, I cannot personally confirm this yet, but may add more info later.
