Hi all,
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up about the antibiotic Rifampin. Recently, I underwent some surgery and the wound became infected. I was prescribed Rifampin and Bactrim and took them both for 2 weeks. I then got my labwork done and found that my ferritin had jumped from ~1,300 to ~3,400. This was over a span of just 3 weeks.
Curious, my mom went and read the info that comes with Exjade and found that Rifampin reduces Exjade's efficacy by 44%. And that was the number obtained from just a 9-day trial of Exjade and Rifampin used together.
My hematologist said that 3,400 may not be an accurate number at the moment, since things like surgery and infection can elevate the levels temporarily. But the Rifampin definitely, without a doubt, played a role in elevating that.
So just a heads up!
