Cereal for infant without iron
« on: January 11, 2013, 01:44:09 AM »
Hey all! Our baby girl will be starting solids soon. Want to start with cereal but all the ones I can find are iron fortified. Any suggestions as to which ones don't contain iron? I don't even mind making it at home if its not ready made. Please tell me the brand and where I might be able to purchase. TIA.

Hello

I was advised by my doctor to eat cereals at breakfast so to add calcium supplements to my diet. I exposed my concerns about introducing also unwanted iron into my diet, since most of the cereals have added iron (if not all). However, she replied that the the iron in the cereals would not add more than what I normally eat from red meat and it's nothing compared to the iron overload arising from blood transfusions. I may have understood it wrong, but I guess it makes sense.

Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that you can take any suitable adult food, put it in the blender and serve it to a baby. This includes adult cereals like oatmeal and other cooked cereals. It's much cheaper and the baby likes eating the same foods as the adults are having. I have 5 kids and we almost never used prepared baby foods or cereals.

Hi Algol and Andy. Algol, you're right -- I asked the hemo and they said the same thing. I actually researched a little bit and Kashi brand makes a few cereals that are quite low in iron. So Andy I will be using your trick to start her on these :)

A baby food grinder works great. Our kids ate most of the same things we ate. It saves a lot of money too.

You may also try an organic store - organic baby cereal is not iron fortified - and that is what we fed little A - check to make sure when purchasing if the particular brand is fortied :)

Thanks Sharmin, I will look for a few. The Princess is quite particular about other things so she may not like just one type ;)

How about Cheerios. Can I blend that and give with breastmilk. My baby is 6 months. What else can I give her? I was thinking about only breastmilk for a couple more months but may give a little cereal here and there. Do you give any vitamins or other supplements?

do not get too fixated on the iron content in food. With Tx, the iron from the food is miniscule compared to the actual Tx. Also with today's chelation meds avaiability, the compliance to chelation is pretty good and then the iron from the food is really non-issue unless someone is having steak for every meal :)

We always used the infant, iron fortified cereal but as the kids got older we gave them the adult kind and just used the babyfood blender. It's definitely the best investment ever because u can steam and blend anything and u know what u r giving your baby.

Go to wholesomebabyfood.com for what foods to introduce when and recipes. I love that site. If u r breastfeeding, the milks all your baby needs for the first 6 months. I didn't start either of my kids on solids until they were 7 months. This way, I knew that there was no extra iron from food going into them as long as I could control it hah
If u r breastfeeding, here is an article on the benefits of waiting to introduce solids...u will be pleasantly surprised.

Not sure what your exactly looking for but if your just looking at your regular grocery store... For off the store shelf cereal... Kellogg's honey smacks and post pebbles seem to be the lowest in iron daily value. Most cereals (and i took a day to look at all cereals) are 20-50% per serving. but Honey smacks is 2% per servings and post fruity people's are 10%. I find those to be the lowest. I hope this helps. My husband loves cereal so I knew there had to be one out there at least was very low in iron.

I hope this helps ;)
