Questions about few supplements.
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:29:53 AM »
I figured out I'll post all my questions in here regarding supplements.

First of all, I wanted to ask regarding two supplements.

1. CoQ10

http://www.puritan.com/co-q-10-055/co-q-10-100-mg-015593

Will it be fine for thal majors to take? If so, will 100mg be okay or a slightly higher dose is good?

2. Vitamin A

Is there a limit or caution that needs to be taken when consuming Vitamin A for thal majors?

http://www.puritan.com/vitamin-a-984/beta-carotene-10000-iu-001520

Also, aside from above Vitamin A supplement (as Beta Carotene), I found this A type as well (contains fish oil also as A):

http://www.puritan.com/vitamin-a-984/vitamin-a-10000-iu-001020

So which one would be safe to take if I plan to do so? Carotene one I assume, because you said not to take fish oil until or unless T2* score is good, correct?

Would above (10,000 IU) suffice daily needs and would be okay to take? If so I may order these next time when I plan to order my supplements.

Regards,

-P.

CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant and it is one of the supplements often recommended by thal doctors. Very few people are deficient in vitamin A. I do not recommend the use of added vitamin A unless testing has shown deficiency. A is fat soluble and does build in the body. A good diet should be sufficient.

Thanks Andy, I'll add CoQ10 to my next stack list. Would 100mg/day suffice?

I found it alone and also with cinnamon as below:

http://www.puritan.com/co-q-10-055/co-q-10-120-mg-plus-cinnamon-1000-mg-017115

Now, I know Cinnamon's extremely good effects on sugar metabolism because of the fact that I used to take it between 2009-2010 and had extremely good results in my sugar levels. But I could hardly tolerate taste (taste is still okay in powdered form) but it (the powder) used to get stuck in my throat due to being very rough so I discontinued it.

So I think above supplement can give me just what I want.

So taking 100mg or let's say even 200mg will be okay for CoQ10? Or 200mg will be excess?

Also can CoQ10 bind free iron as it being an antioxidant? Just thought I'd ask as we're discussing it anyway.

Regarding Vitamin A, I want to say that I am not much greens eater or even a carrot eater but I now regularly take zinc (about 50-55mg/day) and from reading your another post, I found that zinc helps formation of A, so is it good and will be fine even if I don't take A supplement?

Thank you very much, Andy.

I haven't seen anything that would indicate that CoQ10 works as a chelator, but the higher the ferritin level, the lower the CoQ10 serum level is, so supplementing is useful. It has been found that thal minors also have lower CoQ10 levels, so it is also advised as a supplement in thal minors. 100 mg daily should be sufficient. Cinnamon is a very helpful spice, as are nutmeg and ginger. Utilizing them in cooking is advised.
