Can you explain about my weird RDW?
« on: March 20, 2013, 12:51:53 AM »
I want to ask about the strangeness yield a complete blood check of mine. All components in my full blood check result indicates thalassemia minor. RBC increases, the normal HGB in lower limit, MCV and MCH are low. That's all normal for patients with thalassemia minor. But, there is one thing that is rather odd. Patients with thalassemia minor usually have a normal RDW. If increased, it is not too much. But why my RDW high? That is 18.9%! This thing according to some sites I've ever read is not normal. Can anyone explain why my RDW high? Is the level of hemolysis in my body increased dramatically? Or what? Please explain it if you know. Thank you.

The RDW can be elevated in thal minor. See the chart at http://www.thalassemiapatientsandfriends.com/index.php/topic,3480.msg35538.html#msg35538
The high end is 22, although it is usually below 18.5. Iron deficiency seems unlikely because your Hb is normal.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.
