hydroxyurea and stomach upset.... very worried !!!!!!!!

My daughter who is 2yrs 4 mths has been taking HU 2.5ml for 21 days. Her stomach got upset because of it a few days ago. So I stopped it for 2 days. After that she took HU for 3 days and today her stomach is upset again. I called her doctor and he said its ok and to give her entamizole syrup 2.5 ml thrice a day for 5 days. He also said to stop HU for two days. He also said that if her stomach doesn't get used to it we might have to stop it. My question is wouldn't her stomach get used to it. And is there some better way to take it to reduce side effects. Also should I ask to doctor to decrease the dose to make her stomach used to it. Plz I am getting worried now. I hope we don't have to stop HU. She is also taking folic acid, calcium, vitamin e, vitamin b12 complex.

I would also like to add that by stomach upset I means loose stool. I am glad to say that her stomach has gotten better. Hope it stays that way with hydroxyurea as well. BTW through out all of this she was active as usual and trying to eat/drink as usual. BTW I also caught her trying to drink her bath water ( yes! She is a toddler ) maybe that made her sick too instead of the HU.

What form of HU are you giving?
I suppose it is 500mg Capsule?
isn't It?

I am not aware the liquid form of HU.

I am dissolving 500mg capsule in 10 ml water and then giving my daughter 2.5ml of this. She is 2 yrs 5 mths weights around 12-13kg. She is also taking vitamin E, vitamin b complex, calcium as well. She was fine for the first 16 days of the medicine but all of a sudden she is having lose motion. Don't know if its from HU or some other thing she ate/drank. Her doctor has put her on entamizole for 5 days. Her stomach is better though. So is there a better way ( meaning with food before or after) or which vitamin to give with HU and the rest at some other time of the day. I really want her stomach to get used to it.

we started with 200mg dissolve in water(same process), now 330mg, his wt is 20 kg.
currently no stomach upset problem.

Thanks for your quick replies. It feels better to know that other people are fling through the same things. So when his loose motion did u keep giving him HU or like stopped for a day or so. If her stomach doesn't settle down I am thinking of dicussing with her doctor to lower the dose maybe ?

Hi, just wanted to inform you that certain chemists are certified, theuy can break the capsule into required dosage capsules for children to take. It just makes it easier to give it to a child.

I know Some Place in Lajpath nagar (In Delhi), they are certified to split the medicine, But I have Never tried. Are you getting the Splitted HU. If yes could you please share.

No I live in Karachi and I break the capsules myself. So I wanted to know does ur son go to school. What I really want to ask is can the kids on HU lead a fairly normal life. My daughter just got diagnosed and we r still trying to understand all this.

Yes I get hydrea split from Nath Chemist in CP (delhi). Pls let me knw this lajpath address too. So now I jus have to give her a capsule like anyother medicine. I haven't ever given it any other way.

In Delhi I know that Dr. V.P. Choudhary, who also prescribed this but only for Thalassemia Intermedia patient. Like i know he advise to my child also becz my child was not on BT till 4 year so he consider that she is a Thal intermedia, though i have already gone for her mutation analysis and waiting for reports.

My son is 7 yrs old  , E-beta thalassemia. We are giving him Hydrea from Feb 2010 and his Hb increased from 8.3 to 9.1 on July 2010.but after few month his Hb drop because of viral fever and then it continue to drop(during last 3 year) and now stable at 7+.

My son has been Transfused two times during his 7 yrs and both the time he was suffering with High degree of fever.

When you initially started your son on hydroxyurea and he had stomach upset and slight pain, did u stop hydroxyurea for a day or two to rest his stomach or kept giving it to him so that he got used to it. Your reply would be really helpful. Thanks
