Tiredness/Sleepiness/Unhealthy

Hi Everyone,

I am new here. About a year ago, my son had to go through blood tranfusion because his Hb levels dropped so low. The doctor did a blood test later on, on my son, myself and hubby and me and my son was diagnosed as having thal minor (beta for me and alpha for my son (this is what the doctor says)) while my husband's results was ok. Is this possible? Me and my son having different type of thal minor?

Also, my son (3 yo) keeps falling sick more often than my younger daughter (2 yo). Could it be due to the thal minor? I have done a blood test on my daughter as well but have yet to get the results.

Thirdly, I have been feeling tired and feels sleepy easily this past year especially. And my mood swings are quite bad. I have bouts of depression too. I read somewhere that having thalassemia can cause this. Is there something that I can take? Especially for the mood swings. I get angry so easily with the kids and I just hate myself for it.

Please help...TQ

DNA analysis of both parents and both parents is needed. Alpha carriers often cannot be detected except by DNA analysis. One of the parents carries alpha, and most likely an alpha mutation and not a deletion, as the deletions moderate the effects of beta thal, rather than causing a worse condition. However, there are alpha mutations, such as the triplicated alpha gene that contains 3 genes instead of 2, causing an excess of alpha globin to be produced. Combined with a deficiency of beta globin production, this can cause an intermedia condition that may require occasional transfusions. One of the parents carries some form of alpha, so both should be tested.

You carry at least beta minor, which can leave one fatigued. I would suggest that you also have your vitamin D level checked, as deficiency affects more than half the people on earth and deficiency will also add to the tiredness and fatigue caused by beta minor.

Mood swings? Get your vitamin D level tested. Most people are deficient and the level should be at least 35.
