jaundice? hemolysis ? After transfusion
« on: October 24, 2013, 06:54:23 PM »
Hi,
Once again my son looked yellow2 days after transfusion.
Once again when I asked doctor what to do they said take to emergency.
Once again they did CBC ( hb 11.1) and sent us home.
They never treat anything or prepone next transfusion.

Is this emergency visit necessary?
If so why and what should be looked for?
Doctors in emergency don't usually know much about thalassemia so
what questions need to be asked?
And what information needs to be given?

Do all thals go through this jaundice post transfusion?

Zahra

Emergency visits take hours and really exhaust me.

Do they do a Coombs test when this happens to see if it is related to antibodies? The blood is also filtered red blood cells only, isn't it?
Andy

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Thank you for replying. I asked and doctor said they did CBC and reticulocytes and that his Hb is ok and I can go home. I asked what about the jaundice and could hear the senior doctor telling the junior one she should have checked bilirubin but no one did. No one mentioned a Coombs test.
:(.
I went back to the hematologist and asked if he needs to come early for next transfusion b/c Hb id is already 11.1 four days after transfusion and appointment is still 2.5 weeks away but he ssid to come on same day unless the child is vety pale or symptomatic

Should I ssk for a coombs test next time?

Zahra
