I want to let everyone know that Danielle is ok after the ablation, but has not been on due to the loss of a dear young thal friend who was only 19. She's understandably feeling down but will be back soon and thanks everyone for their concern.

Dear Christine,
That is just one of things we Thals have been fighting for ( I know me & my sister has for that matter).
So far we are the oldest living thals here in our city. Bcoz not all properly diagnosed thals here can afford the treatments regularly. And the fact that iron overload can have serious effects on your body.
Honestly I got a bone problem too..my bones & joints often hurts. My doctor said its due to hormone deficiancy.
It really is sad to hear Thal patients dying at an early age but I guess that's just how life is...   :sigh
We just have to stay optimistic & hope everything would all be better soon.  :smile2

this is the reality which we all have to face, face it strongly just remember one thing, I agree we are ill and we have lost too many friends but what about normal people who doesnt have any ill-ness but they  also die at a very young age, someone by heart-fail someone by accident, we all are same :) we dont know how many days we have in our life, but we do know how many blessings we are having every day :)! there is a Quranic Verse, I would like to share it with you guys

Allah Said: I have given each and every diease cure, except death...

do we need to say anything else :)?

Ayesha,
You are so right Ayesha, all we can do is be as strong as we are able to be, and live life as fully as we can. As my 97 year old Greek grandfather said when his son, my father, died of a heart attack at age 54, "Your clock is wound up when you are born, and when it runs out, you die". When they called to tell me my father had died, I said, you must mean my grandfather, he is 97. But no, it was my 54 year old father. Life is crazy and unfair. I just try not to be  too hard on myself, to live in the present as much as possible, and to fill myself with love as I breathe in air. A psychic once told me to fill myself with peace, joy, love, and happiness, and wish that for others also. It has a calming effect for me. Take care, Jean

Hi everyone.  Thank you all for your concern.  I am doing ok physically, just tired.  How I'm doing emotionally is another story. :(

Just to let you all know, my beautiful friend Dana did not die from iron overload, or organ failure due to Thalassemia.  She had some of her teeth pulled, before having her braces put on, and bacteria from her teeth ended up in her blood.  It then ended up in her mediport.  She eventually went septic, developed a bunch of clots, had a few strokes and then went into cardiac arrest.  They were able to revive her, but she was extremely brain dead while on life support.  So, her parents had the horrible decision of keeping her alive or not.  They did not want to see Dana suffer any longer, so they decided to take her off the machines.

The wake was extremely difficult, and it took a toll on me.  I am close to her parents as well, and seeing them and their devastation was sickening.  I'm so tired of losing friends/loved ones.   :(

I just didn't want you guys to worry about it being something directly related to Thal.  I'm sure having Thal didn't help it, and neither did the mediport, but it was bacteria from her teeth that eventually made her go septic.  This is actually the second Thal friend of mine that has died from their teeth, though, so please be careful when having work done on your teeth.  If any of you have a heart problem, even if it's a murmur, you need to be pre-medicated with antibiotics before having any kind of dental work done (even if it's just a cleaning!).  If you don't have a heart problem, but you have Thalassemia, and are getting teeth pulled or some other kind of work done, speak to your doctor about whether or not he wants to pre-medicate you anyway, just in case.

I'll be around again.  I'm just going through a lot right now.

As a matter of fact, I just found out while getting blood yesterday, that I don't have ONE herniated disk in my neck ... I have THREE.  So, my doctors are talking to me about getting that surgically taken care of also.  I wonder why I was told I only had one a few months back.  My MRI report says I have three.   :rolleyes

Sooooo, after the stomach surgery, I'll be dealing with my neck, because I cannot take the back pain or numb hands anymore.   :whyme

I hope to God that you are all doing MUCH better than I am.  I think about you guys all the time.  I promise I'll try to post more.

Love you guys!  :heartpink

Danielle,

I am very sorry to hear about your friend Dana, infact dental work on Thalassemics is very dangerous. My daughter had cavity in her three teeth before we knew it, when we told the hematologist she panicked and immediately send us to dental department, we were booked right away bypassing several appointments. We found out later the tooth bacteria can easily enter into blood and thalassemics who are susceptable to infections due to their condition are in grave danger, their body cannot fight effeciently to this bacteria which can quickly spread. Since then we are visiting special dentist every three month to check on her teeth. Painful but true, so please everybody be very careful and use antibiotics with dental work and tell your dentist that you have thalassemia and they can prescribe best antibiotic for you.

Regards

Danielle,
I am so sorry about your friend, she was so young. My heart goes out to you and her family. You are going through so much, Danielle. I send my love and support, and just wish you were not in so much pain. You have had so many medical problems to deal with, it is overwhelming. You are strong and such a good person, a wonderful role model for all of us. I hope the doctors are on the ball and do what needs to be done as soon as possible. Love, Jean

Hello Danielle,

I am so sorry to hear about the death of our fellow Thalassemic  :( . Please convey our condolences from the whole group to her friends and family.

May she rest in peace. Amen.

You are hardly back and now you are saying that you have to get the disk fixed by surgery! You poor thing! as if the recent things that have happened to you weren't enough!

I hope this the last time you go for surgery and be back with us for good.

Wishing you all the best and praying that this time you have this procedure done in a totally painless manner! :pray

Take care, Peace!

Hi Danielle,

You know how sorry I am to hear about Dana. It is so tragic. And so sad that this happens. We will do our part to educate others so this does not happen.

Everyone needs to know this. If you have a weakened immune system or are on any medication that can lower your white blood cell count, or have a history of susceptibility to infection, you should start antibiotic therapy before any dental work, including routine cleaning. If your dentist doesn't understand why, explain that thal patients are very susceptible to infection and the teeth and gums are very convenient vehicles for bacteria and that thal patients can't risk it without antibiotic therapy that is started in advance. Patients with ports have to be especially diligent about this as ports are common sites of infection.
Andy

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Hi Andy .
Thanks for the information about Dental work.
Guess what? lasts month I had some problem with a tooth.I went through so much pain and I required a course of antibiotics to clear the infection,I was the one whom went to the doctor to ask for the antibiotic, because after two weeks my wound was not healing and I was in agony.
Still it would have been nice if the doctor /dentist was aware of the danger and took the initiative to  then gave me some prophylactic treatment, it would have saved me all the pain and stress I went through.
sometimes ignorance is painfull not bliss :dunno :dunno :dunno.
Kathy
