chest pain when running
« on: September 07, 2014, 05:03:34 AM »
hello everyone!

was just wondering if my chest pain was related to my being thal-minor.

I get chest pains just slightly above the mid-point between the middle of my chest and my left nipple - so its probably the heart.

I get it just when I begin my run. Have to slow down for it to go away. Then is there is no further chest pain when I resume running. I go for regular runs for about 40 minutes, about 5 times a week.

What do you'll think this is???

Thank you!

Backgroud:

age 30, male, fit, bmi of 21.8, eat well

hb levels=12, vit-d=50, take daily fish oil capsule and vit-d and vit-c tablets.

twice in a week, I take natural vit-e-400 capsules and vit-b-complex-50 tablets.

don't know if relevant: resting heart rate = 60 beats per minute, resting respiration rate = 23 breaths per minute, resting blood pressure 112/76

I think it is most likely related to the reduced oxygen caused by having a lower than normal Hb. It sounds very similar to what I have always experienced because of asthma.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Thanks.

What is the solution?

Could it alternatively be PHT?

What has helped me most is learning deep breathing techniques and using deep breathing when I exert myself. Deep breathing helps to maximize the oxygen intake. I don't think you would see signs of pulmonary hypertension at your age.

Thank you Andy. Sometimes I have noticed the same pain when sleeping on my left side - goes away upon changing sleeping positions. Sometimes I have it when simply sitting. But of course, it is most noticeable when I first begin my run. But I still wonder, why does it go away upon resuming running, after slowing down initially?

Hello there,

Quick answer from a fellow runner (also a Thal minor - 32yo, Hb level similar to yours - 11.5 last time I had a blood test). I'm not quite sure what your pain relates to - have you only started running recently? Do you start off very quickly or do you pick up the pace progressively? It might be that you need a bit of a warm up period.
I have never experienced this pain but since you describe it as transitory and only affecting the beginning of your runs it does not sound serious. As you are having it also when sitting/sleeping it might be unrelated to thal.
P.S. - If you can run 40min a day 5 days a week you are doing well :)

It may be that you are adjusting your breathing once you've run a bit. I agree that you should start out slow and work your way into the run.

I tested the lack of warm-up suggestion today. Started off slow and increased the pace gradually, to see when, if at all, I feel any pain.

I still felt the pain in the beginning, even though I started gently. Followed it up by full throttle running, but that did not induce the chest pain again.

1. slow walk - 500 meters - no pain

2. medium pace walk - 500 meters - no pain

3. slow jog - 200 meters - pain, had to slow down

4. medium pace walk - 300 meters - pain subsided

5. full throttle, maximum speed - 100 meters - no pain

6. alternated between "medium pace walk" and "full throttle" several times thereafter - felt no pain ever again

P.S. - If you can run 40min a day 5 days a week you are doing well :)

Thanks. it isn't usually 40 min of continuous running, if that's what you thought. I mix up walks/jogs/runs in that period.
