Male Fertility and Thalassemia Major trying to conceive?
« on: December 22, 2014, 02:43:30 PM »
Any males with Thalassemia Major (transfusion-dependant) who are trying to conceive and are unsuccessful due to iron overload in past or present please share your story I can offer guidance.
I have Thal. Major and was able to successfully conceive with my wife and have beautiful twins. I would like to help others who may be troubled. There is hope!

I have never been able to find any information about people with Thalassemia Major having children. Under what circumstances will the kids also have Thalassemia? I have always thought that people with Thalassemia's children have great chances of also having the disease, but is that true? I am not really sure why there is such lack of information on the topic. Thank you for your contribution to the forum!

Plenty of thal majors have children. As long as their partner is not a carrier, all children will be thal minors. Our member, Waleed just recently announced the birth of his first child.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

I don't think there is any lack of info on thals being parents. It's quite common and if you are around this forum or the Facebook groups, you will regularly hear from thals who are parents. Many have more than one child. The key is to stay in good health and maintain a low iron burden. Some patients will need hormone treatments to become fertile, but many need no help other than good treatment.
