Nationalities. Not intended to offend
« on: November 10, 2006, 10:48:50 PM »
I do not intend to offend anyone with this poll. I am simply curious what nationality is most impacted by Thalassemia. If you dont mind, please state what type of thalassemia you have and what your ethnic backround is. We are ALL brothers and sisters. We are a family, no matter who we are or where we came from! :hug

Love,
Christine

P.S. If i forgot to mention a  nationality, please forgive me, I am new at all of this :)

(We are not even 25% each)!!! Hows THAT FOR ODDS???  :rotfl

The question certainly didn't offend me and I admit to being very curious as well!

I'm Taiwanese - that little island below Japan and to the right of China - and I have an intermediate form of alpha thalassemia called Hemoglobin H Disease.

Hello Christine

The doctor said that one of my son's gene is common in Egypt and the other one is rare to be found in Egypt and it is mainly found in Turkey and Europe.

My husband and me are 100% Egyptians. It is said that one of my old grandfathers was a foreinger who came place beside Syria now. Who knows?????

Hi! my mom is of Spanish, Japanese and Filipino descent and my dad is of Spanish,Chinese and Filipino descent, so  most probably thalassemia came from the Spanish blood.

Both my husbands and my parents are immigrants from India (Punjab).  I guess our son has the
Asian gene.

My doctor tells me there is a significant number of Britons who carry thalessemia trait from the days when the Romans occupied the southern part of the "Sceptered Isle".

Any olive skinned Britons out there who can confirm?

C-

Like I've said before, I'm 50% Italian, but my father is mostly English.  He tans easily, but I am very pale (due to the thal I'm told).

I'm not really sure if being olive skinned would have anything to do with the gene mutation...Because many thals are either pale, or very dark due to iron overload.  :dunno

I'm a mongrel.

On my father's side I have Spanish (37.5%), Japanese (12.5), Chinese (25%), and Filipino (25%)...

On my mother's side I have Spanish (25%), Chinese (25%), Indian (12.5%), and Filipino (37.5)...

The common denominators are Spanish, Chinese and Filipino.  Majority of the mix in my blood is Spanish and Filipino.

I have read from most sources Thalassemia trait is prevalent on Europeans and Caucasian descents... so it must be from my Spanish descent.  :dunno
