Newbie here, my doc suspects Thal. minor

Hi!

I recently had a blood test done and after reviewing the results my doc has sent me to an hematologist for further testing. I would be grateful for some opinions on my current test results. For my background: I'm a 36 year old woman living in Germany. My father is from Tunisia but I don't know if he had Thal.

Ferritin: 22 ng/ml
Thrombocytes: 250T/µl
Leucocytes: 6T/µl
Erythrocytes: 4,65 Mio/µl
Haemoglobin: 11,7 g/dl
Haematocrit: 36 %
MCV: 77 fl
RDW: 14,80%
MCH: 25 pg
MCHC   : 33 g/dl
Vit D. (25 HH Cholec.): 28,3 ng/ml (This is after taking 5,600 I.U. daily for about two weeks)

Hi lilalucy,

It does look like it could be thal trait. If the RDW was higher, iron deficiency might be expected, but other tests besides ferritin would need to be done to check for iron status. A hemoglobin electrophoresis test can confirm beta thal trait. I would suggest that you keep taking vitamin D regularly.
Andy

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Yes, I will continue with the vitamin D supplement. It is the only supplement which really makes me feel different when I take it.

I have an appointment with a hematologist later this week. I assume I will receive the results next week?

So I received further test results finally and the doctor told me its iron defiency, not thalassemia minor.

Here are some of the new test results:

Thrombocytes: 243T (was 250T/µl)
Leucocytes: 6.7T (was 6T/µl)
Erythrocytes: 4.72 Mio (was 4,65 Mio/µl)
Haemoglobin: 12.1 (was 11,7 g/dl)
Haematocrit: 36.2% (was 36%)
MCV: 76.6 (was 77 fl)
RDW: 15.09 (was 14,80%)
MCH: 25.5 (was 25 pg)
MCHC: 33.3 (was 33 g/dl)

The new test also shows the results for
Transferrin saturation: 10%
and
Hemoglobin A: 95%
Hemoglobin A2: 3,4%
Hemoglobin F: 0%.
