« on: August 20, 2015, 05:42:34 AM »
Can somebody give me advice on above. Our blood bank has started to provide phenotype matched blood for thalassemia patients but all this is at cost which we will have to pay. Is is worth to pay for this and give phenotype matched blood.

Phenotype matched blood greatly cuts down on transfusion reactions, and if possible it should be used.

thanks andy, one more question please if u can let me know. phenotype match is to be done for each crossmatching or it is done only once, because it is very costly.

There is a full analysis of the costs of using phenotype matched blood at http://www.haematologica.org/content/haematol/86/7/742.full.pdf

If it is done universally, it is a cost effective method, and it also means far less transfusion reactions, but I don't think this has been fully implemented anywhere, so the cost savings are not seen.

If the cost can be afforded, it is well worth it to have phenotype matching done.
