Diagnosed with b-thal minor?
« on: December 01, 2015, 09:58:35 PM »
Last year, I was diagnosed with b-thal minor by a heamatologist. My dad has thalassemia and he didn't know about it until the doctor told him when he saw at his results. Pretty much every doctor I've been to in the past 2 years kept telling me that i was just a little anemic. My primary doctor told me to get my ferritin level checked just to see if i don't have any genetic blood disorder. When I looked at my report, I went ahead and did a little research and found that I was thalessemic before the doctor confirmed that i had thal. Now my question is, is thalessemia the reason why i've been having weird symptoms for the past two years? I have nearly lost half of my hair (my hair used to be very thick), I've had a fainting spell before, I'm always twitching after menstruatuation, blacking out and the list goes on. I was so freaked out yesterday because one side of my leg was shaking when I was standing! I thought i was going to have stroke or had PD! (I'm a bit of a hypochondriac). I know I should go for a checkup since this was last year's result, but my doctor is not in my town anymore. Plus I dont have insurance at this moment.
Results from last year's blood test.
WBC- 9.9
RBC- 5.22
HGB -9.9
HCT- DET 32.7
MCV- 62.6
MCH- 62.6
MChC- 30.3
PLT- 304, I'm confused and scared at the same time, it says that the scan shows large platelets. Does this mean I'm prone to emboli?
Ferritin -24 (I've read somewhere that your ferritin level needs to be above 70 to stop hair loss. Is that true?)
Iron -11 I believe
I have other lab results but I don't think they are relevant to thalassemia.

My doctor told me to take geritol because it doesn't have too much iron in it. But I just can't take any pill, they make me constipated and I get acne all over my face. He also told me to take subliminal b12. I stopped taking b12 because I felt like it didn't help. I know I shouldn't just stop taking supplements. But sometimes I feel like I'm taking the wrong supplements. :huh
