Recurring Fever in 7 year old

I have Beta thalassemia minor but have not had any of my children tested for it yet. When my oldest son was about two (he's now 7) he started to get a fever every two weeks. During this time he was very irritable and fatigue. This happened for months and the doctor didn't know what was causing it. I went and purchased children vitamins with iron and started changing his diet to include more iron and it went away until now. He came down with numerous cases of strep throat 4 times over the course of 6 months and that stopped and the recurring fever is coming back almost weekly. It'll come on for a few days reaching to about 103 and then go back down for a week and then right back into it. Doctor's say he doesn't have strep and it's probably viral, but is referring us to an ENT. He isn't currently taking any vitamins and I haven't changed his diet. I don't know a ton about thalassemia since most of the doctors don't know much about it and all the knowledge I have about it is from sites like this. Does anyone think there could be a relation to thalassemia and the recurring fever? We're going to be going to an ENT and also getting some blood work done to see if he has it.
Any help would be appreciated!

I have heard this before in relation to thal minor children. I would say get a complete blood count and if the MCV is low, follow up with a hemoglobin electrophoresis test, which is a definitive test for beta thal minor.
