Tonsil and adenoid surgery
« on: March 05, 2016, 09:09:24 AM »
Hi all! It's been so long since I've written. Princess M is now 3.5 years old. She's been receiving monthly transfusions since 18 months old and has been on exjade for a year now. She is developmentally delayed and neurologist has diagnosed her with mild autism. Additionally she also has obstructive sleep apnea (never has slept more than 3-4 hours at a time). She's very small for her age (weight 13 kg). We were sent to the ENT and he said her tonsils are huge and weighing all her other issues they have scheduled tonsils and adenoid surgery. As a precaution, her hemo did a PTT (thrombin) test to see if her blood would clot normally after surgery and it came back abnormal. They did further testing and determined a vitamin K deficiency so she's currently taking the pills.
Have any of you been through this (the surgery or abnormal PTT) with your thal major child? I'm worried sick... Any advice or prayers for my girl would be appreciated.

It's typically a very easy surgery. I had the same thing done 60 years ago. I would think the only issue would be the low platelets which should be corrected by the vitamin K therapy. I would suggest giving folate if you are not already doing so, as the body needs folate to build all blood cells, including platelets. L-methylfolate is the best form and can be found as a liquid if necessary. She is old enough to be on a nutritional program. Please review the post at the provided link. http://www.thalassemiapatientsandfriends.com/index.php/topic,5190.0.html  I think she could benefit from B complex especially.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Thank you Andy. She has such a limited amount of foods she will eat (due to some ongoing sensory issues). I hope to be able to incorporate these vitamins and supplements soon. It is a huge blessing (and surprise) that she takes the exjade willingly.

I wish her the best with her surgery.  I had my tonsils removed at the age of 6, however I am a thal trait.  My surgery was quick - hopefully her surgery will be quick as well.  My son has had surgery after breaking his wrist, and last summer to remove his wisdom teeth - he did well.  Just make she is transfused prior to surgery.
