Any Vitamins to avoid for thalassemia patients?

Andy I'd just like to point out that in some situations this may not be a great idea as splenomegaly can sometimes swallow huge numbers of platelets resulting in low counts so I would assume that getting the blood even thinner may cause lack of clotting when required most (wounds, cuts, grazes, blood tests, etc.)?

(of course depending on the degree of Thalassemia to start with)

The opposite is actually true. Low platelets are most often a result of oxidation. Vitamin E is a superb antioxidant that can help to prevent the destruction of platelets. I would not suggest more than 400 IU daily if platelets are low.

@Andy Hi Andy, but I would have thought the mass reduction in platelets is because the spleen is so large and they simply get stuck in there which is why thrombosis is the concern when having a spleen removed? I would assume that taking vitamin E if you still have your spleen would certainly be beneficial however?

Vitamin E would be valuable in either case, but if blood thinners are taken after a splenectomy, they say to avoid other blood thinning substances. Personally, I would like to see natural substances used instead of so quickly resorting to blood thinning drugs which can have many side effects.

Totally agreed. 
I also had a little read about how blood thinners work.
My mistake, If I understand correctly they do not reduce numbers they either prevent the clumping process (aspirin) or they lengthen the time it takes for platelets to clump together (warfarin)..??

My baby taking fish oil so we stop giving her vitamin E ?
