Oh this is a sore subject........ :wah :wah :wah

Well this is going to sound like a fairytale story now but ONCE Upon a TIME when I was YOUNG and SINGLE, hmmmmm  ???

I use to go to the gym 3 times a week, swim twice a week and dance all night long. I gave up swimming because i would rather go out with my then boyfriend and then I gave up the gym work because I got married and well dancing hmmm I didnt have a baby sitter......lol

I know excuses excuses but now my son is old enough that he don't need a baby sitter and I need smurfette to join me in the dancing department lol (ahh remember when  :rotfl :rotfl)

Thalassaemia Minor or Major should not be an excuse for any of us to not be able to do at least 30 minutes a day of at least walking. Once you are confortable with that u can increase it. Oh and marriage and children shouldn't be an excuse either.

Miaki xx :huh

I was wondering if doing activity that involved breathing is good for Thalassaemia, coz we need more oxygen right?

I started swimming since young and can hold my breath for more than a min -> don't need too much oxygen so can hold?

Played harmonica during school days -> lots of breathing

Wondering if meditation will be good for us too.

BTW, I just realise I have Thal- 28 now.

Been thr army for 2.5 yrs in Guards, played alot of basketball freq with friends always commenting that I lazy -
Collegue always comment I look tired too.

Aeonia,

You are exactly right. Maximizing the efficiency of the oxygen delivery system in your body is extremely important. Exercise and deep breathing will both aid in this and will help provide oxygen to every cell in your body. People who carry any thal trait and even majors, will do help themselves by regularly doing whatever level of exercise that suits their energy level. Even mild exercise like light walking will improve the circulation and the amount of oxygen that is provided to the cells. Proper diet and nutrition will also aid the circulatory system. I am a great believer in vitamin E as an aid to improve one's circulatory system. Folic acid is also a must for any and every thal.
Andy

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Hi Rehman,

For a beginner a tredmill may be hard to catch up with, you may want to start walking daily atleast for 30 mins, also watch your food and see what type of food causes your wight to boost and try to avoid it or eat it once in a while :)

best of luck

I just found out today that both of my daughters are Thal Minor.  We had them tested when my oldest started getting sick alot and was also constatly tired.  We originally thought she had mono.

Both of my girls are competative swimmers.  My oldest swims a minimum of 32,000 yards a week.  She is very competetive and is going to be competing in the final USA Swimming Grand Prix in 3 weeks, her first national level meet.  She just turned 14.  My youngest is ranked 41st in the country in her respective age group/best stroke.   However, they struggle with longer distances and up until today although they do well racing, have been labled as "lazy" by their coaches.  Coaches who have discussed how great they could both be if they would only work harder in practice.  The problem is they both just get so tired during long sets.  So here I am on the internet, doing reasearch, hoping to learn how to keep them from being sick and tired all the time so that their training is not constantly interrupted.  I have seen mention of swimming on these boards and can vouch for the fact that it is a great sport.  My girls have excelled in it and I hope that through a better understanding of Thalassemia I can get their energy levels up so that they can keep swimming fast and winning races.

You already know this, but just want to remind everybody. Winning is NEVER more important than having fun while doing your best. I hope your girls do well in 3 weeks :)
