Breathlessness
« on: May 06, 2020, 06:17:45 PM »
Hi. My now 16 year old daughter is Thal b trait. She has recently been suffering with extreme breathlessness on and off throughout the day and night. It comes on at various times without any particular reason. Every test for lung, asthma, etc clear. Bloods just show usual expected Thal  b trait results nothing unusual. Everything comes back clear but yet she’s really struggling. This is causing complete panic as she’s autistic and cannot cope when it starts. We had the same problem when she was about 11 years old. It stopped after a year until last year. Does anyone else get it any if so what can I do to help ease it? She is desperate for help. Not on any meds currently. Eats well, healthy, great diet.

Any advice please.

Thal minor does cause a lower oxygen level in the body and this can cause asthma like issues. It's not that there is actually any lung problem interfering with breathing. It's just lower oxygen concentration. Relaxing and doing slow deep breathing can help when this occurs. Many people tend to hold their breath when stressed, when they should be focusing on breathing. Watch for any sign that she is breathing shallow and try to help her relax and breathe.  Most thal minors will learn they have physical limits and learn to recognize when rest is needed. I know next to nothing about teaching autistic children, so I can't give any advice on how to do so, but anything you can do to help her learn to relax and breathe will help.
