Hello, I'm new

My friend has thalassemia.

I'm here to find out more about the disease
and what can we do as friends to help
those we love.

Is it just enough to be there?

Hello Bellsandwhistles.
Welcome to the forum and I do wish you learn a lot more about thal in order to undestand your friends' condition better.

Best thing that any friend can do for another friend is to treat each other with kindness and respect and be there when you needed for moral support.
this goes for anykind of friendship.thal sufferers are no different to any other human-beings.Basically we all have the same needs .goodluck and hope your friendship see your friend through good and hard times,
Kathy

Thank you for the welcomes.

We do talk about other things and take part
in activities that have nothing to do with thal.
But if she needs to talk about transfusions
and things of that nature, I'm there to listen
and be a friend. :)

I just wanted advice in regards to if there is
something I should be doing.

The irony is, she's always up and running around,
cramming everything into a day that only has
24 hours in it, while I don't do half as much
as she does.

Are most thals overachievers in their work and/or
school environments?

I don't know if its so much as overachievement as it is a realization that time and life is short and success only takes effort.  :biggrin

What type of Thalassemia does your friend have? There is a lot of difference in the way, they can be helped depending on what type of Thalassemia one has. There is Thalassemia(Minima), Thalassemia(Minor), Thalassemia(Intermedia) and Thalassemia(Major)

Depending on what type, members might be able to shed light on how you would be able to learn and help your friend

And this is what friends are meant for. Being there when they need you!!

Hi Bells!  Welcome to the group!  :hithere

There really isn't much you can actually do, except be there for your friend and show interest in his/her disorder.  Let him/her know that you are there for them, and listen when he/she needs to talk.  If you have the time, you can also try to help raise money for a cure by having a fund-raiser or something.  Some people have bingo or bowling events to try and raise funds.  If your friend goes to any conferences for Thalassemia, or meetings, you can ask if he/she would like you to accompany him/her.

Other than that, just being a friend and being there is more than anyone could ask for.  :)

I realize I am beyond late replying to this
message, but I wanted to thank everyone
for welcoming me.

My friend and I had a nice holiday
visit yesterday and I was thinking about
how lucky I am to have her in my life.

Narendra, I would have to get back to you.

I certainly don't want to ask my friend - the holidays
are a happy time, and I'm sure when she takes her medicine
and goes for her transfusions, she's reminded that she's sick,
she doesn't need me to ask about what kind of Thal
she has. I do have a piece of paper that she gave me
awhile back that I can refer to.

ETA: It's Cooley's Anemia/Beta Thal

Wow, your friend is so luckily to have someone like you care for her.
Always be there for her! Yes, simply listening is enough, especially if she wants to but doesn't think anyone really wants to listen.

I don't know if its so much as overachievement as it is a realization that time and life is short and success only takes effort.  :biggrin
That is so true, so beautiful too.

Hello and welcome to the forum!!!

I agree that the best thing you can do is to be there. I really appreciate my friends being with me and understanding that we have to take into account my thal when planning a day out or a trip to somewhere.

The truth is that you really see what your friends are like when you need them and you have them with you, and that's something that your friend already has.

Best regards,

Laura.
The most important thing in life is not what you achieve but the fact of fighting for it.

I'll just say that at the compehensive care center we go to, you see the younger men between 18 and 30 years old, almost all of them ride very fast Japanese motorcycles.

They seem to get the most they can out of life. :smiley

And one more thing: They are without a doubt, great kids, way above average in comparison to other groups in their age. And that is not my bias speaking.

All the best to your friend

Since I posted last, my friend has developed diabetes. Are they allowed any sugar in their diet at all? (They cannot tolerate the substitute products out there)

Thanks in advance. :)
