Hi Vic,
Sorry to know that you are going through a difficult time. I understand it very well because we went through it as well, and it was awful. I remember our son crying and pleading "no no no, mommy please don't do this to me". It was awful and heartbreaking, and he did seem sad and depressed for a while, also.
Our doctor is looking into exjade for our 8 year old, I will post what he says once he has decided.
I hope that exjade is an option for you. Are you mixing your own desferal? Our pharmacy mixes it for us, it makes things a little easier. I also want to reassure you that even if you don't get exjade soon, as awful as things seem, they will get better. Your son's long term mental well being will not be affected, especially because he has such caring parents.
Do you know any other thal patients in the area? If so it may help your child to watch them get their desferal. This was helpful for a little girl here, she watched an older patient do her desferal and it made her feel better about herself.
I wish you the best, my heart goes out to you.
