Dosage for Folic Acid

Hi,

My Son is B-Thal Intermedia and is 9 years old.

Can we know how much folic acid to be given to him per day?

Hi Mishra,

Usually a dose of 1mg-5mg is given to Thal. Patients per day. The excess amount is excreted since it is a water soluble vitamin. So you should not worry about overdose.

Does folic acid really help maintaing the hemoglobin?

Folic acid is necessary for the production and health of red blood cells. It should be taken by all thals, minor through major.

Interesting, I was put on Folic Acid back in 1997, and have been taking it for the past 10 years or so.  Then recently, when i saw my new Haematologist, he mentioned I needn't take it anymore, so I've stopped.
