Title: Antibodies and transfusions
Post by: BabyI on April 12, 2013, 04:05:33 AM
Hello all,

My baby has to have her blood drawn a day before because to get the exact crossmatch is not easy. This worries me because I read that her blood develops antibodies and I don't know what affect that will have on her available options for blood. Will she find it more difficult to get blood? Is there anything I can do? Please advise me. Thanks.

Everyone has to have their blood drawn the previous day, so is the case with me.

It is very common to develop antibodies after repeated transfusions.  It means that the blood bank will be more careful in selecting blood for your baby.  My son has had several antibodies for the last 12 or more years - although it takes a little longer to find blood - (we also do the cross match one day before) it has never posed a problem.  I remember being really worried when his first antibodies were identified but I am glad that it is not a problem :)

Did your baby have phenotype or genotype testing before beginning transfusions?  If not it will be extremely helpful to do the genotype testing as it will prevent further development of new antibodies and the blood will be better matched to your baby.
