Tea ' healthier' drink than water
« on: August 24, 2006, 10:34:31 PM »
Most people thought tea dehydrates the body, on the contrary I found this article on bbcnews.com and found tea is actually good for you. A small reference is also found for people having anemia and how it can reduce the absorption of dietry iron from the food. I am also providing the link in case. Enjoy !!!!

Tea 'healthier' drink than water
Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers.
The work in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition dispels the common belief that tea dehydrates.

Tea not only rehydrates as well as water does, but it can also protect against heart disease and some cancers, UK nutritionists found.

Experts believe flavonoids are the key ingredient in tea that promote health.

Healthy cuppa

These polyphenol antioxidants are found in many foods and plants, including tea leaves, and have been shown to help prevent cell damage.

Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it
Lead author Dr Ruxton

Public health nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton, and colleagues at Kings College London, looked at published studies on the health effects of tea consumption.

They found clear evidence that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can cut the chances of having a heart attack.

Some studies suggested tea consumption protected against cancer, although this effect was less clear-cut.

Other health benefits seen included protection against tooth plaque and potentially tooth decay, plus bone strengthening.

Dr Ruxton said: "Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it."

Rehydrating

She said it was an urban myth that tea is dehydrating.

"Studies on caffeine have found very high doses dehydrate and everyone assumes that caffeine-containing beverages dehydrate. But even if you had a really, really strong cup of tea or coffee, which is quite hard to make, you would still have a net gain of fluid.

"Also, a cup of tea contains fluoride, which is good for the teeth," she added.

There was no evidence that tea consumption was harmful to health. However, research suggests that tea can impair the body's ability to absorb iron from food, meaning people at risk of anaemia should avoid drinking tea around mealtimes.

Tea is not dehydrating. It's a healthy drink
Claire Williamson of the British Nutrition Foundation

Dr Ruxton's team found average tea consumption was just under three cups per day.

She said the increasing popularity of soft drinks meant many people were not drinking as much tea as before.

"Tea drinking is most common in older people, the 40 plus age range. In older people, tea sometimes made up about 70% of fluid intake so it is a really important contributor," she said.

Claire Williamson of the British Nutrition Foundation said: "Studies in the laboratory have shown potential health benefits.

"The evidence in humans is not as strong and more studies need to be done. But there are definite potential health benefits from the polyphenols in terms of reducing the risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancers.

"In terms of fluid intake, we recommend 1.5-2 litres per day and that can include tea. Tea is not dehydrating. It's a healthy drink."

The Tea Council provided funding for the work. Dr Ruxton stressed that the work was independent.

It has been recommended that thal patients drink tea with meals to help prevent absorption of iron in the gut On the other hand, if you have iron deficiency anemia, you should avoid tea at meals and if you want to have tea you should have it between meals instead.

I am a big fan of tea. I do not think of it as dehydrating at all. I love chinese tea and enjoy it with ice everytime i can do so..

Is there any other good type of tea that anyone favours? I know that the Indians make a very tasty tea with milk

At the TIF conference in Dubai, tea was mentioned often by researchers. What was said was that they have observed no difference between black tea and green tea as far as the properties. And both helped prevent iron absorption from the gut, but no one really seemed to know why. It was actually a bit funny to see all these top doctors and researchers scratching their heads because they all knew that the research shows tea prevents iron absorption but no one had an explanantion as to why.  :huh

I must say, my mom alway made sweet tea with dinner when I was a child.  Even now I drink sweet tea on a daily basis.  This could explain quite a bit because I never altered my diet when doctors found my iron levels very high.  I am from the southern United States so all tea eventually ends up as sweet tea. :rotfl

Hi,

What I meant with chinese tea is not Green Tea or whatsoever there is available..It is the plain tea that you drink without sugar and it is prepared using a special little clay pot.

I heard that when you add milk to the tea, it loses its ability to prevent iron absorption. Is this true or not????

I thought that adding milk ( dairy products having calcium ) help in peventing iron absorption.

What is right??

I have also never heard that milk will prevent tea from inhibiting iron. Dairy products are among a group of foods, including tea, that inhibit iron absorption. There is an article about reducing iron absorption at the CAF website at

http://www.cooleysanemia.org/sections.php?sec=2&tab=10&sub=117

Quote
On average, after a meal with red meat, about 35% of iron will be absorbed into the body. However, this may vary between 10-40%, depending mainly on whether the meal contains milk or milk products. The calcium present in milk, cheese, yogurt and cream decreases the absorption of meat iron...The absorption of non-meat iron from the diet into the body is much less than that of meat iron, but it may vary more than twenty fold, depending on the composition of a meal. The foods which decrease its absorption are (i) cereals and (ii) dairy products. The foods which increase its absorption are (i) fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C, (ii) meat, fish, shellfish and poultry, and (iii) pickles, sauerkraut, soy sauce, vinegar and alcohol...Tea, coffee and some spices (e.g., oregano) decrease iron absorption. Drink plenty of tea and coffee daily, particularly with your meals. Better yet, if you take it with milk. Tea is also a very good source of antioxidants

Please note the emphasis.

And Sahil, you are so right. The Indian way of preparing tea is so good. I was addicted after one cup.  :biggrin
