Bone Marrow Transplant
« on: September 01, 2012, 11:07:06 AM »
Hi To All of you.

Last week sara was seen by specialist who pretty much deal with all the transpalnt in the country. I asked if i was allowed to have baby trough  IVF , which will fix sara after using the baby's bone marrow. They said no to both. They said even if i have baby the matches sara, they would not do the transplant. They said they dont want to take the risk. They said she is older and something might happend to her.

My question is what if she becomes very sick and she needs urgent transpant? The doctors would not even consider the IVF.
Iam really worried ,plz can any one give any suggestion.

I've same question as Camis's.

Normally, 3-8 years max is the ideal age for BMT. If shes older than that, I can certainly understand the concerns of doctors.

Quote
How old a thalassemia major patient can be to be successfully cured with a BMT?
Thalassemic patients with a HLA identical donor has be transplanted as soon as possible, but the results in adult patients( age >17 years old) are not so brilliant.
Adult thalassemia patients are higher risk patients for transplant-related toxicity due to an advanced phase of disease and have a cure rate of 62% with current treatment protocol.
BMT is not the best therapeutic option for adult patients.
